DJ loses job over Queen's Speech

A radio DJ has lost his job after stopping the Queen's Christmas message, telling listeners it was boring.

Birmingham-based BRMB presenter Tom Binns cut short the speech during his live show on Christmas Day, saying: "Two words: Bor-ing".

The show was broadcast on BRMB, Wyvern in Herefordshire and Worcestershire, Mercia, in Warwickshire, and Beacon Radio in the Black Country.

Mr Binns, who is also a stand-up comedian, said it had just been a joke.

The stations' owner Orion Media said a number of listeners had complained.

Mr Binns, who has previously been on BBC Radio 2 under the guise of spoof hospital DJ Ivan Brackenbury, said he had received a death threat following what he did.

"They were just jokes," he said.

"We have got to allow some people to be upset without responding with a knee-jerk reaction. We've got to stop pandering to a small minority."

He added: "I knew beforehand I needed to take the speech off the air as I didn't know how long it was.

"I knew anyone who was interested in hearing what she said would be watching it on TV or listening to Radio 4.

"About 88% of the population had more interesting things to do on Christmas Day than listen to it."

David Lloyd, group programme and marketing director, said: "On Christmas Day, one of our presenters, Tom Binns, made some inappropriate comments surrounding the Queen's speech.

"We do not condone what he said in any way; whether said in jest or not. We are making contact with the small number of listeners who were offended by Tom's comments and have complained to us to convey our apologies, and have also apologised on air."

after being involved in radio for a number of years now, i understand what he did was very close to the knuckle. and let's be honest, in most if not all stations some action at least would be taken. but what he said sounded just light hearted fun, and if it was enough to upset some people. then those type of people need to get something called a life, or get laid.

on the grid.

It sounds to me like a publicity stunt. BFBS have pulled a few over their time. There's no way a part-time DJ would be trusted with a network on his own and I'm pretty sure they'd know that the Queen's Speech would replace the news on that day.

i love how people judge radio stations that don't even broadcast in their area.

brmb used to be pretty decent in the late 90's and early 2000's, but since around 4 years ago it's gone badly downhill. i think it was taken over by another company, and now it sounds exactly the same as every other station they have. lots of network programming.

I hate it when they do that, theres a REAL radio station near here which i despise. But I used to listen to Century radio when we went to my sisters in Lancashire which is fairly frequent but then suddenly Century was rebranded as REAL and theres a load of tripe on like on REAL radio at home.

I kinda like Real. It would be much better without Debbie Lindley though

    • I guess we'll have to wait and see when the new schedule kicks in, although I could see Scott staying where he is.  Assuming that's the case and there are no other moves, there would be several available studios for Matt & Mollie - 82C or 82E of the 'old' studios, and 82M or 82N of the new ones.
    • The BBC commissioning brief mentions it is a 'mid morning show' for Radio 1 Dance https://www.bbc.co.uk/commissioning/radio/documents/comm_brief_r1_dance_morning_show.pdf
    • Nothing to apologise about, I was just intrigued on how DS and UM react
    • I would be pretty confident that if they keep avoiding using James Cusack on that slot over the next few weeks, then it will probably be him that gets the show permanently!
    • That’s two names who probably won’t be doing that slot permanently then.
    • Moyles spent most of the 52hr sgow calling him that lol
    • I stand guilty as charged as the DS poster.... It was I Okay, so yes Connor has good energy and does the show well, I take it back, however, my last experience of him he spent every other link saying "It's Connor Coates in for the ledge that is Charlie Hedges" and then he started saying "Clem Douglas" - again after critisising that I see she is styled as that sometimes The point I was trying to make was, yes we know it's Charlies show, we know she is a ledge, and we know she is not here today, no need to keep reminding us Regards R1 dance, I suspect Arielle is pointed at the drivetime slot to go against Mistajam unless we know it is breakfast that will be live ? Apologies to Connor and anyone offended by my comments, was just going on my past experience of Mr Coates, who seems to be a very competnt presenter
    • I know we have discussed this before, but can someone shed some light hoping @Lily Georgia can help Since the Wogan House closure, and 1-330 from Manchester, studio 82A (Mills) has been used by Scott's R2 show, in fact i note that him and Grandad Nelson are from there now days The question I have is with 1-330 coming from London again soon, who is getting a new studio? will Scott move to one of the newer ones down the corridor or will he remain in 82A and M&M get a new studio They cannot use 82D as that is used for drive, and currenlty 82A is in use by Scott from 2-4pm In the old days it used to be 82A for Greg, Scott, Annie and 82D Adele, RMC, Drive, Jack I note that Jack is in a brand new studio so maybe M&M will come from that one as well, maybe the same one as Vine uses?
    • Maia Beth is doing Friday Early Breakfast on 7th & 14th June.
    • Joel Mitchell is in for Nat on Sunday 9th June.
    • Ore Olukoga is on 13.00-16.00 on Friday 31st May and Friday 7th June.  Nikita Kanda is doing Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd June.
    • Very pleased for producer Amy - it's no coincidence many of the best shows in recent years have had her working on them. You can tell her & Helena are a great production duo and that the whole Matt & Mollie team are a really close-knit unit in general. Some lovely speeches by both Matt & Mollie too to end the show on Sunday.
    • Echo what most have said here. Connor has great energy which is important for that sort of slot and the shame for him is that the dance line-up is so strong that there's no obvious 'in' for him to get a regular slot -Danny, Sarah, Pete Tong, Arielle, Charlie Hedges, Jerry and Charlie Tee are all great in their slots. A live show on Radio 1 Dance really feels the obvious way to get a proper foot in the door at Radio 1. Although to be fair to the DS critic I think it was just the one poster and can very much hear Connor in my head saying 'in for the legend that is Charlie Hedges'.
    • James Cusack is in for Jack on Friday 14th June, doing the chart while Jack is at Download.
