BBC censorship

It's rather interesting to hear the the number of celebrities appearing on Radio 1 recently subtly and sometimes not quite so subtly showing their disdain for the BBC's seriously over cautious approach towards edgy comedy since the Brand, Ross, Sachs incident.

Ricky Gervais had a fair few comments to make yesterday, as did Matt Lucas and David Walliams this morning.

...and quite right too in my opinion. It's pretty frustrating to hear presenters being gagged by ridiculous regulations, not being able to speak their minds, having to walk on egg shells for fear of offending one or two people and excellent features being axed as a result.

Pffff! Rant over.

'To disagree with three-fourths of the British public is one of the first requisites of sanity'.

People need to give it a rest! When it got to the point of being broadcasted to millions of people, it was a big invasion of privacy and they wanted people to know that it meant a lot to them to the point they wanted something to be done. Had it never made it to the airwaves, a simple apology would have been acceptable. They attacked the poor man for not doing an interview with them, that was the only thing that happened. Millions of jokes have probably been made about this guy, but it was the fact that they included his daughter in it that made it invasive.

I don't think there needs to be any toning down of comedy, it's fine the way it is. There wouldn't be comedy if every little thing had to be excluded, it's all about making a good joke at the right time. I mean, look at some really old talk show clips from 1992, they're not funny anymore. Plus, every comedian has their own style of delivering those jokes, they'll lose their signature if they have to tone it down.

I'd personally rather have people speak their mind, I don't want to hear people say what everyone's saying, it's like listening to local radio. I want to hear the personal opinions, not what they "think" they should be saying, people should accept that not everyone thinks the same thing, just like they have to accept that we all vary in personal taste.

i fully support the other clebs for remarks against the BBC,i have real problems with people bashing the BBC, i really do !

i do think that the BBC should have stood by Brand & Ross, & they basically caved in & they shouldn't have done, as it sets a president for the future.

the BBC IS the BEST broadcaster in the world there is no doubt about it, for £140 a year look at all the great stuff you get;

4 tv channels with programs like, Top Gear, Blue Planet ect

7 national radio stations + many more local stations

many online products,

& no adverts anywhere to be seen.

i don't watch any ITV as all it shows is crap, & im not being all high & mighty i just find all their programs cheap & tacky CH4 is way better (who also get some of the license fee) the BBC is admired all round the world for its content & the only way it could get to where it is, is by the way it is funded, Sky for example (which i have) is nearly £50 a month which is £600 & even though there is over 1000 channels, it is basically the s**t spread thinner, the BBC for £140 is fantastic value, & if i had the cash to actually buy the BBC & have it as a private company & people had to subscribe to get any of its content, i wonder just how many people would choose not to have access to any BBC content, not many i bet.

people moan about how much BBC presenters are paid, well the BBC pay the going rate Ross was offered millions by ITV, the BBC wanted him so they offered him more money to go to the BBC, it's simple economics & the radio-1 dj's are paid a bit more than the going rate because they could get more money by being on TV (that is what the BBC said when Chris Moyles alleged pay was announced '£600k a year' Edith was rumored to get £250k a year {underpaid i think ;)} )

BBC employees like Paul Gambaccini should be ashamed of themselves for suggesting that fellow BBC employees should be sacked, even Terry Wogan thought the same of Jonathan Ross, when Sir Terry Wogan accepts a fee for presenting Children In Need (where as all the other presenters Gabby Roslin, Fearne Cotton etc do it for free) shame on you Terry SHAME ON YOU!

all comedy offends someone somewhere, thousands of people pay to watch Russell Brand on his stand up tours & they know exactly what they are going to see & hear, so if you don't like Russell Brands style of comedy why would you watch/listen to him on the radio ? idiots

i feel that the BBC has now made it's own cross & will have to bare it alone, all because it caved into a bunch of right winged racist bigots who think they are better than everyone else & that they hold the high moral ground, when in fact they are the lowest of the low, & here's a thought for the people that cry like babies when they see/hear something they don't like F**K OFF & turn over !

:)

couldnt be bothered to read all that :) your arguments are poor because they are always biased to your favourite celebrities and have childish opinions.

in what way are they biased ?

it is the whole Brand/Ross scandal that has caused this issue & its irrelevant that i happen to like them.

the pay some of the BBC presenters get is a issue to people & that is the main reason that people wanted Ross sacked.

im sure that some people were offended by the jokes on the 'Live At The Apollo' show yesterday that replaced 'The Johnathan Ross' show & as soon as one person is offended buy something their complaint has to be looked into, even if the person has never even seen/heard the show.

:)

I agree with your statement about how almost all comedy offends somebody, that's just how it works. I think that censorship has a time and a place, but the BBC can be a little heavy on shows sometimes. It's a shame they didn't ask my opinion on censorship in the BBC trust survey

Gordon Brown says there's light at the end of the tunnel..........

    • I see Katie (and Mairead) were out with Jordan tonight.  I don’t listen to the show any longer, I am shocked they are allowed to mention Jordan.
    • At least I do not ask stupid questions…😂
    • I suggest you follow the other DJs too if so, you will learn the hardest working will go further 🤣
    • A simple check on his instagram would answer all your questions , he’s on tour with his wife and the team behind his podcast. I suggest anyone to follow the radio presenters, you will learn a lot about their other jobs and work commitments.
    • Where is Jamie? It felt like he was settling in when Vick wasn’t on but he’s not been on since last Tuesday now. They’ve not even mentioned him, in fact they’ve mentioned Jordan more than they’ve mentioned him in the last two days.
    • Scott's show is on the road next week, live from Malmö in Sweden on Wednesday and Friday, ahead of Eurovision. As he's doing the semi final coverage on the TV on Tuesday and Thursday alongside Rylan, Gary Davies sits in for him on those days.
    • I don't feel there's so much overlap between M&M and Scott's shows. M&M is of a similar calibre to Scott & Chris on R1, with genuine laugh out loud moments and usually a show packed full of real interesting content. Scott's R2 show is IMO a shadow of the stuff he did on R1 (not his fault, he's doing exactly what station management want), with music and content to appeal to a much older audience.
    • To be fair, Scott & Chris would've still been fine on Radio 1. It was mentioned at the time that Scott's move was very much on Radio 2's part rather than Radio 1 wanting to move them on. That's the one problem that Radio 2 has, trying to appeal to such a wide demographic.. it's the perfect listen for many, but equally a turn off for many others. I think they have the balance fairly right.
    • I agree Scott has always been a good standalone presenter, but always better when with someone. When chappers left the radio one show it felt a different show and Chris joining was what it needed and brought new life. for the format of the radio 2 show Scott’s show fits well with the station but again, there’s the huge gap between radio1 and 2 As been said already old radio2 listeners feel it now feels too young with latest changes, yet old radio1 listeners still feel radio 2 feels too old. The inbetween stage demographic of too old for radio 1 but too young for radio 2 is still not catered for radio 2 was left to grow old with its audience for too long and to change things up now feels to try and change a brand image the right thing to do is leave it as it is and cater for that 1.5 demographic which I’m sure the new proposed 00s and 10s station will do if approved. Problem is it’s so overdue that by the time it gets off the ground these listeners are already likely to be lost and the changing image of radio2 likely to lose what it stands for as a brand with the “it’s too young now “  moving to boom and the “ it still sounds old “ crowd not able to move with their favourite presenters like Scott so finding themself on capital a radio 1.5 would have been perfect for Scott and Chris, seems unlikely but this is why I think who branding of bbc radio needs a rethink if these new stations get off ground
    • Bank Holiday Monday Schedule 6am-10am: Arielle Free in for Greg 10am-2pm: Dean & Vicky (No Rickie, Melvin & Charlie) 2pm-6pm: Vick & Jamie (No Katie) 6pm onwards: As normal.
    • Dare I say they've sounded great this past week?  Very much gelling.  Maybe less pressure?  Seem to be having a genuinely good time and not forcing things.
    • I'm in the minority in my workplace, most of them love country music.  Me, the American, does not care for it.  That said, I haven't haaaaaated some of the country adjacent stuff that's been on the R1 playlist.
    • The Eurovision semi finals are on from 8 to 10pm on Tuesday 7th and Thursday 9th May with Richie Anderson. That means Sara Cox in on till 8 on those days.  Saturday 11th May is Eurovision 'Super Saturday... 1-3pm Your Ultimate Abba song with Gary Davies  3-6pm Michelle Visage's Eurovision All Stars 6-8pm Eurovision Request Party with Owain Wynn Evans 8pm Eurovision Grand Final with Scott Mills and Rylan Clark
    • It is funny because everyone thought Matt was on the way out, now he's been described as the heir to Mills.
