A Year From Now...

With the new schedule changes announced, and Scott's contract running out next April time, what are your predictions/wants for Radio 1 in a years time?

I think there will be major changes at daytime, and I think the recent announcement seems to line up some of them.

Weekdays:

04:00 - 06:30 Pete Allison

06:30 - 10:00 The Greg James Show (back to a zoo style format with his current team of Pippa, Travis and Chris Smith brought over. Chris to do a swap with Tina so she does afternoon news).

10:00 - 13:00 Alice Levine (Fearne's show sounds stale now).

13:00 - 16:00 Scott Mills (I hope he renews his contract. Show sounding the best for a while. Can't see Radio 1 wanting him to go now).

16:00 - 19:00 The Matt Edmondson Show (I think it will be between him or Dev, but Matt I think just has the edge. Hope for a team style show similar to Scott's old drivetime show circa 2006).

19:00 - 21:00 Zane Lowe

21:00 - 22:00 /

22:00 - 01:00 Huw Stevens

Weekends:

06:00 - 10:00 Dev

10:00 - 13:00 Phil Taggart

13:00 - 16:00 Fearne Cotton

16:00 - 19:00 Dance Anthems with Danny Howard / The Chart Show with Nick Grimshaw

What does everyone think? We'll see in a years time how right/wrong we were.

I think Alice ending up on daytime is inevitable. I wouldn't have been opposed to a Phil & Alice Drivetime, but it seems that paying two presenter wages is a budget stretch too far for R1 these days. So she'll probably end up in the 10am slot, which will be great as you can practically hear Fearne grabbing her coat midway through her incredibly dull '3 word review' feature these days. Fearne can go to weekend afternoons as you mention.

Drivetime/Breakfast will be an interesting one. I think Ben Cooper will either stick with the status quo and persevere with Grimmy, or swap him with Greg James, a la Cox/Moyles.

Matt Edmonson is the natural successor to Scott I think, but long may Scott's show last in the meantime, it's by far the most entertaining on R1 for me and Chris Stark has added several years to its' lifespan IMO.

Phil Taggart is an interesting problem. I can't help but wonder what went down for him to be reduced from 8 hours a week to 1.

I think there will be a Grimmy Greg swap, Fearne will leave and Scott will leave. Having heard a bit of Pete Allison covering for Dev recently, I think that he's been massively overrated on here. Just because he's fresh blood from commercial radio, it doesn't make him any good. He was bland and couldn't do links longer than about a minute- not much cop. I think Dev will get Scott's slot when he leaves, because Dev's been ready for a daytime slot for years now, I thought he would be next in line for that show years ago. Matt Edmondson to stay on weekends, he's got the flagship show on there, and he said on his podcast recently (perhaps jokingly) in response to an email that he wouldn't want to do radio five days a week.

04:00 Gemma Cairney

06:30 The Greg James Show (obviously with Chris Smith with the News)

10:00 Alice Levine

13:00 Dev

16:00 Nick Grimshaw

WEEKENDS

06:00 Newbie

10:00 The Matt Edmondson Show

13:00 Phil Taggart

16:00 Dance Anthems/ Chart

Zane and Huw will be around for a while methinks.

in 2 or 3 years time

4am- Dan and Phil

6.30am- Greg and Fearne

10am-Alice Levine

1pm- Matt Edmondson

4pm-Nick Grimshaw

7pm-Phil Taggart and Huw Stephens

10pm- Gemma Cairney

1am-specialist

I'm assuming that sadly Scott will have moved on by then, hopefully to radio 2,and that Zane Lowe will also have decided to move on ,or maybe doing a new weekend new music show. (weekends 1-4 maybe). I think Greg and Fearne would work well together on a new breakfast show

She's a producer there so I'd imagine her role is very similar to that on the radio.

I may be thinking too much into this but Scott has just played his World Cup song he did with 5 Seconds of Summer to mark the end of the World Cup on Sunday and he said that this may be the last time that we ever hear it. Could this be a sign that an announcement about his departure from Radio 1 after 16 years could be revealed in the next few months? I really hope not, the show is sounding fabulous!

It's always better to quit while at the top...

    • I mean I've been growing our engagement on Facebook in my department, there's still an untapped audience there. Also, as you alude to, the number of community groups has grown a lot since lockdown. I'd love to hear more about their thinking. If this had been Radio 1's strategy I don't think anyone would have disagreed.
    • I think they must’ve been slowly killing of their social media presence I know for Radio 2 and 6 they do have dedicated unofficial social media groups so there is an audience. All Request Friday and features like that has a place on social media as can get requests via comment sections but I think Facebook struggles to know what it is these days.
    • I just think it's more about what they're doing. If all you've got is a DJ dancing to Beyonce's latest hit for thirty seconds or Sara Cox reading out the All Request Friday number in a funny way it's not really what Facebook prioritises. I think it's great that studio interaction, but it does lend itself to Instagram and TikTok more. But I honestly believe there is a place for Facebook with the Radio 2 audience. The trouble is Radio 2 have barely used Facebook for the last year so there doesn't seem to have been a strategy there.
    • Agree, all I'd see on x was medical professionals from other health trusts having a very carefully worded pop at each other, mixed in with a clip of jeremy vine with a camera on his helmet, a very strange place indeed! I imagine they have some data to back it up, but is the r2 audience really using tiktok?
    • I get not putting resources into X which these days is a strange mix of angry political debate and adult content only. But you'd think Facebook was still the most popular social channel amongst Radio 2 audiences.
    • Radio 2 seem to have decided that their strategy is just short video, so it does probably make sense with Instagram and TikTok. But I find it hard to believe there's not longer form content that wouldn't suit Facebook better.
    • These late announcements are so lacklustre. It's not quite like the time they announced Harry Styles last minute!
    • Friday - Nathan Dawe, Wilkinson Saturday - Jax Jones Sunday - London Grammar, Remi Woolf, AJ Tracey
    • Probably got fed up of the usual moaning bastards all over it, asking for Ken Bruce and Jimmy Young back on air.
    • Think it may have been better to include Radio 1 in this and 1 xtra ultimately focus on boosting a BBC Sounds social media to bring the multi-generational content marketed to a broader audience through one singular channel and having a separate social brand skewed to younger audiences maybe they should consider just having a @BBC @BBCSounds  @BBCSport @BBCNews @BBCFresh (youth brand) social media acounts national.
    • Although a lot of their target audience do seem to be moving across to Instagram now.
    • I suppose it's because not a lot of people use Twitter (or X) so maybe it's not worth their time, surprised about Facebook though.
    • Surprised to learn Radio 2 and 6 Music are moving away from X and Facebook, I would have thought there's more appeal in Radio 1 doing that instead. Their target audiences still use Facebook, and it's still a key way to reach a good mix of audiences. Agree about X though, don't see any need for it. https://radiotoday.co.uk/2024/05/bbc-radio-2-and-6-music-quit-facebook-and-x-publishing/
    • Just wondering…has any DJ got the answer wrong yet? I’ve not heard one and they are pretty tough questions! 😆
    • On the weekends theme @Bluestraw said this in the chatbox but I was listening live to James cusack's show yesterday and agree it would be a travesty if he doesn't feature in the weekend plans. Both the greg james fb page and users on digital spy are saying similar. Imagine that, being both part of the LGBTQ+ community but able to appreciate good presenters in 2024.
