Is the Radio 1 social team asleep? Nothing about the announcements on social media yet

Talking about R1 social - sadly they now post less stuff on Twitter. Even after Mol crossed the finish line they merely uploaded a videoclip showing how she got the news of the new total and it’s one hour later…

It's not really where the target audience are, if they're doing more on TikTok it'll mean less elsewhere

it would make sense to ensure both instagram and TikTok are treated as equals and kept in tandem as reels and downloads of instagram are growing when TikTok I think I’ve heard is stagnating.

Previously during Red Nose Day events or summer games they tweeted more than now. This year they tweeted less but still highlighted lots of tweets from listeners on the R1 live blog.

I mean it makes sense to do less with Twitter or X as it has change. There has been a lot of change in how its run and operate with focus on making it a platform people pay for and its been volatile for advertising with lots of loss in paid promotions on the platform and the business worth has been waining and any communications and marketing for any business and organisations are seeing that

Yes sort of, although it’s still weird that they tweeted when Mollie was halfway completed but did not do so when she crossed the finish line.

That is a bit strange, yes. Fair point.

Oh yes, I'd say both are equal. It's just they'll have been on Instagram for some time, whereas TikTok will have been a new addition in recent years, so something probably has to give. Us anoraks like to see Twitter as important, but I find myself putting much more time into those other platforms.

Incidentally when I applied for a social job there probably four years back (wasn't successful!) I did say I thought the audience wanted more insight from the station rather than just content around the stars. I think they've moved a lot more in that direction, especially with the visualisation in the studio. You see more of Greg James than Harry Styles.

I don't envy the PR machine at Radio 1 going straight from Mollie King's challenge to Big Weekend announcements without a break!

Quite enjoy their visualised radio clips. Hope they can bring back the studio live feed.

Previously they have a Radio 1 feed which has a standby message and will switch to the studio during some events, and a 24 hour 5 Live feed - both are gone since two or three years ago.

I mean doing a 24 hour feed on 5Live wouldn’t attract many viewers which makes sense that’s they closed it as it is in a nutshell what Talk TV is and they wouldn’t attract many viewers. I know they simulcast Nicky Campbell’s radio show on BBC News. I think it would be too expensive to do. But visualisation of extra content Radio 1 wise could I think expand the Newsbeat and Lifehacks stuff across radio 1 socials.

Whilst we wouldn’t want social media influencers taking to Radio 1 airwaves but I wonder if they could hire social media content creators who to the stations social media content production and communications and those who produce multi-media podcasting content to market and promote live radio features and expand on air programmes and features.

It was much in the pre BBC Sounds where they offered more live-streams, visual and innovative multi-media content and where Radio 1 had their own unique webpage design. I think there needs to be as the BBC will focus on more digital mediums targeting younger generations. I wonder if they could look at creating a unified brand for the content exported on Radio 1, CBBC and BBC Three that can be a brand that binds elements of the BBC together.

I really liked how Global app allow for video streaming when listening to stations like Capital. They said you could go to the app to see their new breakfast show presenter when Jordan was announced.

A good way to get more people using their app. I wonder if Sounds would consider it.

I doubt it. I do think they do have a good idea with the Global Player visualisation in the app. I think they need to look at simplifying the app design for Global Player as it looks bit messy and cluttered. If they had a separate app for LBC and news based content and the text articles that would help simplifying the user interface.  But they do need to consider allowing people to watch the live lounge live as it goes out. It doesnt need to be on the app but could just be on facebook, instagram, X and TikTok. They could decide to just start by doing more YouTube videos uploading some of the interviews Clara or Jack does with music and non-live lounge session videos to visualising some of Matt V. Mollie features.

Yeah definitely. Feel the Radio 1 iPlayer station has fallen by the way side a bit.

Yes, feel like a mess very inconsistent it got the energy of a random computer folder with miscilanious bits and bobs. Think they need to have a BBC Y or BBC Fresh brand on IPlayer or something that feels youthful to collate that brand of content specific to the 12-30 approx age-ranges or possibly get rid of having BBC One, Two, Three and Four category folders and exclusively using the channels names featuring in the IPlayer programming schedule guide and live-stream options.

    • Yeah they make the weekend shifts go so much quicker. Like today, the piece about Matt falling asleep in the cafe was funny, it's clear to see why they're going to weekdays. It could well be they were thinking of Danny for it and like you say have decided against that, or like I said at the start it's James Cusack and the slow down on the announcement is him getting out of his contract. Remember he works for radio 1's main rivals. I think it's quite telling that he's doing more r1 cover than usual, tomorrow and then a further 3 weekend shows in a row
    • Nat in for Dean with Vicky between the 28th-30th May.
    • I suspect they’re gonna tie the announcement into something, or they’ve changed plans. I know we’ve said it as a joke but I wonder if Aled was planning on giving it to someone like Danny Beard, but he’s decided against that after the last few weeks. Seems clear to me, though, that if Jordan hadn’t left, then Katie would’ve taken Dean and Vicky’s slot and Matt and Mollie would’ve stayed on weekends, which probably explains why they haven’t picked a replacement yet. If it was going to be the obvious choice, I.e. James Cusack, surely they would’ve announced it by now..?
    • Yep think they mentioned that this is their penultimate weekend of shows but then they will also be on air during Big Weekend and they mentioned they'll be doing 'Party Anthems' on stage during Big Weekend which sounds intriguing. Will miss Matt & Mollie on weekends - they in particular have made that Friday afternoon slot their own - but they'll be great on weekdays. Do wonder if 'Summer on Radio 1' is just a placeholder name until they decide on who will cover the interim. While it's obviously not the case it does feel like they've forgotten there's that weekend afternoon slot to fill given no permenant presenter has been announced for it yet.
    • Zoe Ball is back on the breakfast show on Monday.
    • Just listening to matt and mollie at work and heard them say it's their second to last show on weekends
    • And Arielle mentioned in her Instagram post that her final early breakfast show is the 27th of June - the Thursday before Glastonbury
    • When Matt covered breakfast on 22nd April, he said their new show was starting in 10 weeks, so that’d be the 1st July.
    • Would love for it to be like the Summer Friday Thing that me and @DC were remisincing about recently. Lots of events going on that could easily form part of it.  https://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/summer/cardiff/thursday/1.shtml
    • I'm guessing there is also a stack of weekend events like Glastonbury
    • I think more likely it'll just be a temp presenter for weekends 1-4 to give Matt & Mollie time off, plus time to plan and pilot the new show.
    • Yeah I don’t think they’ll be anything that drastic - maybe a week or 2 of cover on early breakfast etc, but maybe just having that weekend afternoon slot covered over the summer means they can put someone on from September who maybe isn’t available until then?
    • But they said the main changes would happen in July.
    • But they said the main changes would happen in July.
    • I wouldn't be surprised if they do this around June time: 05.00 Ore Olukoga 07.00 Greg James 10.30 RMC 14.00 VKJ  That'll probably happen (for my guess) from the 17th June. And for weekends: 07:00 Sam & Danni 11:00 Gregor Davidson 15:00 Charlie Hedges Maybe Fridays aswell: 07:00 Greg James 11:00 Gregor Davidson 14:30 Jack Saunders
