The 'New Sound of Radio 1'-Your Thoughts

The new schedule has been in place for a few weeks now, what do you think of it?

Just to get started:

I think Grimmy is excellent and V.funny he would have been a far better pick for Drive than Greg.

Greg is very boring and I think it would be an embarrasment if he got breakfast. Scott is infinitely better on drive than him.

Weekends are dire, Sara Cox apart, Huw is ill-suited to daytime IMO he's a very good radio presenter but best in the evenings. Gemma Cairney is extremely annoying, the tone of her voice and the content of her radio show. (I don't care about fashion!) She's not for me. Danny Howard seems like a very nice bloke but his dance anthems show consists of two hours of pop music with dance remixes (probably not his fault) and then 1 hour of proper dance. He seems to have no personality, charisma or features.

However Jameela Jamil has defied my expectations she is funny, has a good rapport with the callers and pleasant to listen to. Although she did do a bizzare link telling us about how a friend of hers had all her property stolen from her house which seemed like an odd thing to tell nation. Also Mills' show + Coxy are sounding excellent. Grimmy and Annie Mac evening show is also a firm favourite. I will be interested to hear Phil Taggart this weekend aswell from the very small amount I've heard of him he sounds good and he was nominated for a Sony this year. They should also make more use of Edmondson I think, he's a very witty man.

I'm actually warming to Greg a lot more now, his show does seem to have got better, but I don't think that he's really ready for breakfast. I agree with what you said about Grimmy though, he has been really good on Scott's show this week, and is always good when he's filling in.

I usually sleep through Gemma's show, but of the bits I've heard of it, it isn't brilliant. Huw is alright actually, so I don't mind him being on at the weekends. Even so, I won't listen to loads of his show. And Jameela Jamil is much better than I thought she would be, and I'm listening to the Request Show more than I would do when Reggie was doing it. The link wasn't that bizzare though, she was saying how people were stressed and worried at the moment, but she was like 'It could be worse, you could have all your things stolen...'

I love Grimmy and Annie's show at the weekends, and I really think they should do more radio together. Yes to more using of Matt, he really needs more time than one hour a week....

Scott's show has been even better since the move, and having Chris as a permenant member has worked really well.

The sheep is not a creature of the air.

1. Greg is doing OK in Drive, but not as good as Scott. I only listen to bits and pieces, but those have been quite funny. Need to try him out some more, I think.

2. Scott actually appears happier in the new slot?! Or is it just a big brave face?? Lacking the more confrontational attitude of Moyles, we may never know, until he eventually writes an autobiography !! Still very difficult to listen to. Having to fit in bits and pieces of the Show, mostly during lunch hours. Kind of losing the thread thanks to that.

Mills is guy who is good @ playing the game (and to a point, there isn't much wrong with that).

3. Grimmy has been very good, and, as Oli says, BETTER than Greg. Quite witted, knows his stuff - music/showbiz. Doing well.

4. Chris Stark is an OK addition, but not brilliant. Not like Chappers.

5. Moyles is still pure, undiluted genius.

Obnoxious Greg is boring me and i have never listen to as little drive time radio as now (what did the latest RAJARS say, i didnt see them?) Nick and Annie are great and i would much rather those two, or just Nick take up drive and put GJ on weekends.

Danny Howard seems to be a good presenter although i would like to see a lot more fluidity around his programme imaging and much less daytime sounding (although this has come on since his first show)

Capes :)

i don't count cheesy beyonce remixes as dance music, although danny howard does play some better stuff in the last hour. he needs to stick more anthems in the first two hours though.

as for the rest of radio 1 i just don't listen anymore, apart from scott if im in the car.

on the grid.

I agree Im surprised by Grimmy and he's had me laughing a few times, he's good with guests too. Unfortunately Greg James sounds too dull on his own, maybe he needs someone else in the studio to talk to.

Did anyone hear Phil Taggart at the weekend, he is off BBC Northern Ireland, but was actually very good.

And what some seem to be forgetting is that's a matter of Opinion... you're presenting it as Fact and that anyone who dares to think different MUST be wrong.

I for instance THINK Celebrity Juice is a turd of a show (as with most things on ITV actually), but I present that as an OPINION, not fact.

 Almost thought I was on cm.net for a minute... just a mo though. *

* then I realised I was somewhere getting just as bad.

 I've not insulted anyone for having an opinion, just put em straight that opinion does NOT equal Fact as some seem to think.

Yup. And never let being a dickhead get in the way, same as in EVERY thread.

If people don't like james/mills/cotton, they can do a simple thing... and not turn them on.

The "I love james/I hate james/James is a dickhead/ Mills is better / I hate Mills/ the time of the day isn't suitable/I hate Cotton/ I love Cotton" is becoming just a little boring.

May as well give my opinions (not facts ;)) since this thread's been dragged back up:

Fearne - terrible.

Nick Grimshaw - terrible.

Matt Edmondson - terrible.

Greg James - marginally less terrible.

The 'specialist' DJs, i.e. Zane Lowe, Annie Mac etc. - good within their field, although I find their shows are only really memorable for the music they play.

The other weekend DJs - average. Although Huw Stephens is quite good.

Moyles and Mills - still the only two real reasons to listen to Radio 1 these days.

So save the last dance

For me my love 'cause I

I see you as an angel freshly fallen from the sky...

    • He’s definitely gotten better and the show has sounded fine this week. I think it been at its best when it’s been Katie and Jamie or Vick and Katie. Vick and Jamie are ok together, but I do think the show sounds better when it’s Vick and Katie and therefore I still don’t really understand the point of the trio.    Jamie is, however, a lot better than Danny Beard!
    • The RAJAR coming on later this year reflecting later summer to autumn will be interesting to how it reflects Matt and Mollie in afternoons to the revised changes on radio 1’s new music slots and the schedule re-shuffling Radio 3 introducing a new slate of programmes. Then, later on this year have speech radio stations having domestic political coverage of the election but also America’s presidential election.
    • I actually caught snippets of today’s show, and I found it much better than the last time I listened. I have made it no secret that I like Jamie on the radio, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Matt & him together last year. People have criticised him for not being relatable, but I have to agree with the comment above that I have always found him a naturally warm person to listen to. Maybe the going home set up was something that needed settling in and things are starting to take shape.  It must have been difficult for him joining an established duo in Vick & Katie to begin with.  Jamie was great on something songs today, fully engaged in the caller and sounded like a real presenter. Maybe he is doing as a lot of us hoped and really learning as he goes, how to do it properly.
    • Agree with this. The anti-Jamie feeling was IMO quite influenced by the negativity around him replacing Jordan, since Jordan was exceptional and also universally loved. When people mention Danny and Jamie in the same sentence about bad hiring decisions I almost choke - Jamie may not be perfect but he's several leagues better than Danny already and has bags of potential. Danny is poor and has shown zero potential...
    • Jamie started 4 March, and the figures only going up to 31 March, so it isn't reliable. But it has shown the numbers have dropped in afternoons compared to last quarter. It looks like it's Capital's gain.
    • Do these audience figures reflect Jordan leaving and Jamie replacing him?
    • I think Jamie is really starting to settle into the role well. He comes across as really warm, and genuinely invested in the listeners when he’s talking to them which is nice. I think he’s building a really great relationship with Vicki and Katie too. His recent great company podcast is great too, where he has quite a deep chat with someone new each week. He’s clearly a very genuine person and I think he has some real potential.
    • Most probably. But do wonder what the future of the relax themed programmes will be when they officially wind down that service.
    • I think it's just to replace Wind Down presents... which was in that timeslot, and I'm guessing Chillout Anthems was just a buffer since it'll still be played at 06:00 on Sundays.
    • With listening on the U.K. for the industry in general it is good overall as most stations reach is on the up and shows radio to be more sustainable and stable outlet than linear televisions channels. This RAJAR I think with the increase shift to DAB+ the BBC will be able to say it has it’s audiences for the proposed new stations it wishes to launch and think the new innovative ideas that it seems Jack himself can take credit for on the new music show think the younger under 30 gen z demographic could increase se in that time-slot.
    • Conor Knight is in for Sam & Danni on Saturday 8th & Sunday 9th June. It's Radio 1 at Parklife, 13.00-16.00 on Saturday 8th & Sunday 9th June. Matt & Mollie are in for Greg from Monday 10th to Friday 14th June - it's just Matt on the Thursday. It's Radio 1 at Download, 13.00-16.00 on Friday 14th June.
    • Rajar looking healthy this quarter, with the numbers staying fairly stable.
    • It's made it into the Daily Mail as another reason to bash the station. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13417631/bbc-radio-2-facebook-tiktok-instagram.html
    • I expect that the axing of Chill Out Anthems may be related to the decommissioning and shutfdown of Radio 1 Relax. I assume soon BBC could announce or make official when it’s going to be shutdown
    • The next RAJAR will be putting a lot of pressure on Aled. Will his decisions over Danny Beard and Jamie Laing and to lose Jordan North pay off? If not, it is likely bosses will be looking for his successor.  I am interested to know what fans of the station think?  Ian Chaloner who worked for Greg, Scott and Grimny before rising through the ranks must stand a chance. He is now mainstream editor.  An outsider choice but Greg's former producer Chris Sawyer would be great. He has the creativity and has held the ship well on breakfast. Although I know he is no longer with them.
