Aled's Alcohol Experiment

Jono

Recommended Posts

Aled has volunteered for Radio 1's experiment to investigate the short-term effects of binge drinking.

Every day for three weeks, Aled will be drinking 8-10 units of alcohol, which is more than double the daily recommended amount for men.

You can see his 'progress' on the Moyles show YouTube:

Are there any regular drinkers put off by the effects reported in his video diary, or do you only drink moderately and now feel put off alcohol?

I have to say I haven't watched the video but I do enjoy a good drink. I drink v. expensive brandy, though, and am very fussy about what other types of booze I drink.

Even so, I know I couldn't drink 8-10 units a day/night. Well I could. Happily. And not be drunk. I'd just feel really tired and grotty and very unhealthy. I only drink one or two nights tops on the run and then give myself a break for a few days (or depending on finances and when the rent's due - weeks!!).

I know I sound really boring - but to be honest drinking does bore me after a while. It takes me aaaaaages to actually get drunk and I usually give up before I hit the being drunk stage.

I don't envy Aled having to do this experiment AND still having to go to work every day!!! Yikes!!!!

OH MY GOD!! If you tried this in the US the FCC would come banging down your door within 5 seconds! I cant believe you can get away with this in the UK....okay, maybe I need to open my mind. But seriously, probably what would happen here is the entire listening audience would complain, the station would get shut down, and the story would make national headlines. It would REALLY shock people. There is no way anyone would be able to get away with that. Our radio is clearly more conservative than yours :D

not for people binge drinking. but binge drinking on the radio yes

It's not really on the radio. Just YouTube really... Although he did sound a bit drunk on The Surgery ;)

I guess he's fallen asleep today after his drinking session. No sign of Day 8.

I see your point. But what's the difference between Aled drinking 8-10 units a day for 3 weeks and that chap in America ordering super-size meals every day for however long it was and filming his exploits?? There isn't one. Except Aled very likely won't be endangering his life by taking on this experiment.

Although personally I will never agree with America's views on boozing when they will allow 14 year old kids to buy handguns from the local grocery store yet won't let a 20 year old adult have a glass of beer with a meal.

And you can't shut Radio 1 down, it's run by the BBC, you'd be putting the national economy into dire peril!!!!

I dunno, I think he'll look okay if he keeps it up for 6 months....!! ;)

I listened to them talking about it this morning on Moyles' show. Moyles is such an arrogant opinionated idiot, I cannot STAND that man. He reminds me of everything I hate about my brother. Just the way he was completely rubbishing everything Aled had to say and obviously upsetting him but just not caring about it. Dave, Dom and Carrie all sounded quite apologetic and embarrassed on the odd occasion they managed to get a word in between Chris' rants. He's just rude. There's no excuse for it, ever. And if he's not very good at mornings why in God's name does he present the breakfast show on national radio? Idiot.

But, back to the point and holding off on my Moyles detestation for a moment - Aled is so brave for doing this experiment when he knows it's already making him ill and he's having some obvious and potentially dangerous short-term effects from it. Total kudos to him.

Yeah, like the bad breath thing... why would you say that to anyone, not only in person but also on national radio :S

That's just how Moyles is. He can be quite arsey in reality, but I think he makes great radio, and if I was on-air with my friends I'd probably pick on them too. That's the sort of friendship I have.

There is ALWAYS a line though, and he always crosses it. There is a difference between a joke and being mean. My friends and I also pick on each other. There are certain things we say to each other that we would never ever say in anyone else's company (any racist jokes or whatever), let alone the radio.

8/10 untis isn't really much, thats about 4 pints of beer. I would have quite happily done this experiment for Radio 1 as I always have 3/4 pints after work.

And Aled's experiment doesn't make you want to drink alcohol any less?

    • I think they should just bring that back as was. It's been nearly 20 years, so do it with a whole bunch of new DJ's.
    • I think this year has taught us we know nothing 🙂 Nobody would ever have credibly predicted Jordan leaving and all the changes that followed.   I have another interest outside radio and it is exactly the same - the stuff you never expect to happen is exactly what does.
    • Yeah they make the weekend shifts go so much quicker. Like today, the piece about Matt falling asleep in the cafe was funny, it's clear to see why they're going to weekdays. It could well be they were thinking of Danny for it and like you say have decided against that, or like I said at the start it's James Cusack and the slow down on the announcement is him getting out of his contract. Remember he works for radio 1's main rivals. I think it's quite telling that he's doing more r1 cover than usual, tomorrow and then a further 3 weekend shows in a row
    • Nat in for Dean with Vicky between the 28th-30th May.
    • I suspect they’re gonna tie the announcement into something, or they’ve changed plans. I know we’ve said it as a joke but I wonder if Aled was planning on giving it to someone like Danny Beard, but he’s decided against that after the last few weeks. Seems clear to me, though, that if Jordan hadn’t left, then Katie would’ve taken Dean and Vicky’s slot and Matt and Mollie would’ve stayed on weekends, which probably explains why they haven’t picked a replacement yet. If it was going to be the obvious choice, I.e. James Cusack, surely they would’ve announced it by now..?
    • Yep think they mentioned that this is their penultimate weekend of shows but then they will also be on air during Big Weekend and they mentioned they'll be doing 'Party Anthems' on stage during Big Weekend which sounds intriguing. Will miss Matt & Mollie on weekends - they in particular have made that Friday afternoon slot their own - but they'll be great on weekdays. Do wonder if 'Summer on Radio 1' is just a placeholder name until they decide on who will cover the interim. While it's obviously not the case it does feel like they've forgotten there's that weekend afternoon slot to fill given no permenant presenter has been announced for it yet.
    • Zoe Ball is back on the breakfast show on Monday.
    • Just listening to matt and mollie at work and heard them say it's their second to last show on weekends
    • And Arielle mentioned in her Instagram post that her final early breakfast show is the 27th of June - the Thursday before Glastonbury
    • When Matt covered breakfast on 22nd April, he said their new show was starting in 10 weeks, so that’d be the 1st July.
    • Would love for it to be like the Summer Friday Thing that me and @DC were remisincing about recently. Lots of events going on that could easily form part of it.  https://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/summer/cardiff/thursday/1.shtml
    • I'm guessing there is also a stack of weekend events like Glastonbury
    • I think more likely it'll just be a temp presenter for weekends 1-4 to give Matt & Mollie time off, plus time to plan and pilot the new show.
    • Yeah I don’t think they’ll be anything that drastic - maybe a week or 2 of cover on early breakfast etc, but maybe just having that weekend afternoon slot covered over the summer means they can put someone on from September who maybe isn’t available until then?
    • But they said the main changes would happen in July.
