Wow 😮 I didn’t see that coming! Radio 1 love a curve ball, don’t they?! I think they will be great, they’ve got good chemistry and listeners like them. I remember Matt from the days where he told people not to text in and ask for a  shoutout 😂😂. Matt’s an acquired taste but he’s definitely mellowed. They will be good and split Dean and Vicky up

Arielle won't commit to doing a weekend show as her dj commitments. She would realistically do live lounge as she does presenting like Clara and charisma of Annie mac. Would love her on drive. Think people would enjoy that.
Think Ricky and Melvin will leave to host on 1xtra leaving Charlie on dance anthems and Friday cover.
They clearly like Ore and James so want them in full time at some point. Maybe Nat and Ore on early with James and Vicky on weekends. Not sure where that leaves Dean though maybe Chart to begin with or a weekend breakfast if Sam and danni get drive.

I think that the schedule does need a wider age diversity like how I sense there is at other networks like Kiss and Capital I think with Rickie and Melvin in their forties and presenters mostly in late to mid thirties do think there needs a blend of a twenty something that is more gen z or zillenial at daytime whether thats weekend or weekday.

I did say that Radio 1 has this habit of throwing curveballs. If you spoke to anyone on here a week ago Matt and Mollie were destined for the exit...! It seems big that they've managed to get them both to commit to daytimes.
I feel sorry for Dean and Vicky, they've been quite a good listen, and I assumed they were brought in to offer something different to what Scott offers on Radio 2. M&M feel more competitive for older listeners than Dean and Vicky. Like others say, perhaps they're destined for bigger things further down the line.
Also where does this leave the broadcasts from Salford?

Whatever management feel, I imagine the past week has been very tough on many of the presenters as they are actual friends with Jordan and whilst they will have known what was going on the suddenness of his exit will have hit them.  Katie probably knew nothing of Jordan's axing until she was listening to Newsbeat immediately before her show last Friday.  I genuinely felt sorry for her as you could tell she was shocked and upset.
It's such a shame they didn't get to do breakfast together.  Their breakfast shows last summer were some of the best radio I have heard in years.

The rumours were true then. Such a shame that the tabloids leaked it days in advance. Scott, Steve and Ken are so lucky their news wasn’t spoiled by papers like The Sun.

You do wonder what went on with Dean covering Breakfast in the first week of the new year now.
When Vick returned from her honeymoon she asked on-air to Jordan "why weren't you doing breakfast?" and he gave some weird reply about Katie being busy but Dean did it alone so easily Jordan could have.  The question was probably staged.
These big moves don't happen overnight so there is one of two things here, either the discussions were already starting and Radio 1 didn't want him on Breakfast or Dean covering Breakfast sent a very negative signal to Jordan and he was more open to an offer to Capital.  Jordan probably didn't want to leave but career wise he has had to make the jump.  (No doubt a bigger salary figured too).
No doubt either Aled or Jordan will spill the beans sometime...but I sniff a story here.

If they're really keen and dead set on having Dean for breakfast that might have been the reason, or one of the reasons. I think he'll thrive at Capital but there's no getting away from the loss for r1 is huge.

I think the key phrase is "chance of breakfast on Radio 1" - he had no guarantee of it and as said various times on here - time was starting to run against him.  Plus add in some of the high profile surprising decisions - Dean & Vicky, Jamie Laing - he could easily have been passed over.
And actually - it's totally not impossible that he goes to Capital Breakfast and comes back to Radio 1 to take over from Greg.  Highly unlikely but if the BBC really really wanted him for that gig, nothing to stop it happening.

I was thinking last night this is one hell of a gamble for Jordan what if breakfast doesn’t work out for him on capital he gave up the chance of breakfast on radio 1

Indeed for me rather than sticking to Going Home I'll probably stick to a mix of Bush & Ritchie on Absolute, Mistajam on Capital Dance with perhaps some Sara Cox on Radio 2 thrown in there too depending on what music is taking my fancy that day.

    Well, there goes another legend.
Was expecting him to move to breakfast in the next year or two (if rumours are to believed he will be - just on capital)
Gutted. Him and Greg kept me hanging on.

Jamie Laing feels like the sort of person you’d hear on Hits Radio - a bit of name value there I suppose.

I mean since he has served his time at radio 1 and if it is the sake that he has left for Global the BBC can’t penalise him for breaking its restrictions without wasting too much time and money of breaching contract post his last shift on the job. The fact that Jordan had agreed to work to March the 4th but the BBC decided otherwise and looking like he hadn’t agreed thad Thursday as his last show. On that basis that he could counter claim that the BBC breached their side of the agreement stated. I can’t imagine that if on Monday or sometime next week he is announced as a presenter on Capital FM I can’t see the BBC wanting to get in any legal dispute of potential breaches of contractual agreements.

I can’t see it been so late
When sonny left it was almost instant
i think we can expect an announcement Monday morning with Jordan been brought into the studio and perhaps romans last week
Reading between the lines on global marketing of the show from capital breakfast with Roman Kemp to “with Roman , Chris and Sian “ was a subtle hint to less focus on all been about Roman

when a bbc show changes it gets a whole new feel, capital seem to like a gradual approach to keep listeners already established
global seems a more long term plan for presenters now, nothing to say he couldn’t go to radio x in a few years to succeed moyles after the capital breakfast gig

Ironic that commercial radio was just a few years ago awash with celebs without a radio career crowbarred into one, now it seems a little of the opposite

If so, it gives Aled some time to get his ducks in a row. Jamie could be temporary, allowing a bigger reshuffle ready to fight Capital.

I wonder if Lauren Layfield will play a major role at some point this year too? If she has signed for radio 1 which seems like a strong possibility, they surely must have promised her some kind of major show for her to leave Capital’s Early Breakfast show?

I do wonder if her and Katie together somewhere might be an option? Not sure I can see it being Breakfast but definitely somewhere else on the schedule

I think the safest and most logical bet would be Matt and Mollie 100%. I know there’s been a lot of conversation around the length of time Matt has been at the station now, but I would say aside from Greg they are the most high-profile/popular presenters with current listeners and much younger potential new listeners. They did the Reading and Leeds coverage last year, which as an event is the pinnacle of youth culture in the UK in my opinion. In addition, they’ve both got young kids which I actually think benefits them in staying closer to pop culture than other presenters. Aside from that they have the right playful presenting style for the station which I just couldn’t see working on any other BBC station atm. Anecdotally, the most popular known presenters remaining with teenage relatives are Greg, followed by Matt & Mollie by far. The question will be whether Matt and Mollie themselves want to stay/have the gig from a practical perspective - no doubt they’ll be getting very lucrative offers from Global/Bauer in due course which may also fit better with their personal circumstances. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see them leaving this year off their own accord for commercial radio somewhere.
My next choice would be Sam & Danni - I really think they are incredible broadcasters with a wide appeal. Both very likeable people as well. Would be a huge risk though, given they’re not well known, not based in London/Manchester and haven’t had that level of responsibility yet. I see they’ve got the Going Home slot next week which is a big thing for them and no doubt going to be watched closely by bosses for future opportunities. I reckon that Vick leaves end of the summer and they get the Drive Time slot from Cardiff first though.
My gut feeling is that Dean would get it by himself if Greg left anytime soon - he seems popular with Radio 1 bosses atm, is based at Media City in Manchester and it would be great optics for the BBC to have the first Radio 1 breakfast show from outside London in the second city. He’s also much less likely to want to move to London and have other commercial radio options I would guess - seems pretty settled in Manchester. I’ve actually warmed more to Dean recently but mostly when he’s by himself. Would certainly be divisive with the audience but he seems thick-skinned enough to take any backlash.
Overall, I reckon the bosses main goal will be to make sure they keep Greg for as long as possible over the next few years, whilst they think about where to go next. Greg is still sounding as fresh as ever and with Jordan taking Capital breakfast they’ll want to have as strong a competition as possible for a few years.
That being said, there definitely needs to be a complete overhaul/review of who they want Radio 1 to appeal to before making any big decisions though. The station is simply not sustainable with its “historic” target audience in the current market and music industry. Like it or not, there just isn’t that pipeline of younger listeners that there was 5-10 years ago and bringing in an influencer/TikToker with no radio experience to host a flagship show won’t change that.

Jordan last did it in October with Mollie. And he had a week in August with Katie. After October the next time Greg was off was first week of January when Dean covered.
I did wonder if the Mollie pairing was a trial for a future Breakfast partnership - perhaps because Vick doesn’t want to do it and Katie’s in Manchester with lots of other commitments.
It would be fascinating to understand how this has all played out over the past few months. It really felt like he was going to succeed Greg but now it’s all unravelled.

Same as you, I’m a long term lurker and made my first post here today! 😆 I would agree this is some of the biggest news to hit the station since I’ve been listening as a teen (well over 10 years ago now). With Scott it was a real shame, but I do think we all expected it at some point.
Interesting point about the ages of the presenters. I mentioned this earlier, but I do think there needs to be an honest conversation about the demographic/age of who is actually listening to radio in general (and Radio 1 currently) and the target audience currently set by the trust. In 2012 bringing in Grimmy to the Breakfast show worked - I was 17 at the time and loved the evening show he did and I know a lot of my peers loved his breakfast show too.
However, I think making a similar move now would do very little in bringing in younger listeners - if anything I think it would make things worse. Young people just aren’t consuming music/content in the same way they used to. I’m at the higher end of the target demographic but even I’m in a minority amongst my peers. I’ve noticed that Capital has changed its approach recently to playlist typically Radio 2-ish bands (Take That, Alicia Keys, S club, Busted etc.) as well as chart music. It makes you wonder if the BBC just need to take a step back and reassess how they’re targeting their music stations. I’m not saying anything needs to change content-wise/music-wise but I really struggle to see how they’re going to bring in a younger generation who just aren’t interested in the radio format full stop.
By desperately trying to bring in younger listeners, they risk losing their existing listeners whilst also not bringing in any new, younger listeners at all - leaving very few listeners altogether. Simply because they have different ways of music/media consumption now. Maybe they will have more success with the remit of a “new music station” and not just the 16-29 year old demographic that they have historically fixated on. After all, that demographic was outlined at a completely different time, when the music industry was also in a completely different place. Is it still relevant now?

They were both great, and to be honest the whole mid to late 2010s lineup of djs was excellent.
I remember when Scott left and there was a shakeup of the schedule, I said at the time it felt very slapdash and some promotions felt like they were too soon. Looking back I think that was just because the roster had slowly weakened over time. The drive to recruit celebrity presenters has been a disaster and might have blocked the progression of others. No sign of that stopping now with Jamie Laing getting the nod for drivetime...
Now I won't be all doom and gloom. I think this news means Greg won't be going anywhere for a while. He loves Radio 1 too much to be seen as abandoning the ship, leaving it in worse shape than it was when he joined. Sam and Danni are also excellent and need to be given a prime slot as soon as possible.
