Always fascinating to take a look at the charts included with the BBC Sounds data.
Released at midnight was the Q4 2022 data which you can see here.
Radio 1's Murder Mystery seems to have done good business at attracting Under 35's with that and the 'Afterlife' podcast taking places in the top 4. Greg James is the most listened to Radio 1 show on demand via BBC Sounds, with Vick and Jordan also in the top 10.

BUT... the one that really caught my attention is the Scott Mills Daily Podcast still being in 4th place on the 'Top Podcasts % U35 Skew' - which is significant as this period is October to December, meaning there were zero new episodes but clearly lots of people still catching up....

Interesting, I've missed the figures about Scott, but it sounds like he's more than compensating for those listeners who have jumped ship. If anything he must have more of an audience now than at Radio 1?
I don't think the BBC will need to give much spin to the overall figures - both stations are clinging on to listeners at a time of changing listener habits - including the death of the Queen and the World Cup.

Interesting looking at the youth stations Capital Xtra is double that of Radio 1 Xtra something assume Bauer will be proud to boast. Capital Dance is around 912,000 listener. Easy to imagine it reaching the 1 million threshold soon in the next quarter and holding on to steady growth by year end. Radio 1 seems to with its slight dip with adults done the thing of shedding some to get more younger listeners with growth of 15-24 bracket which in the past has been difficult to do new shows for Vick and Dean and focus of bringing on younger talent has probably helped and hopefully that radio 1 is brave to continue to do things to mix things up for growing that bracket and ensure that 15-24 remains its core listener share

Seems a light downturn on Radio 1’s figures a small dip but something bit of bouncy scatty reliable outcomes for the station but seems to be holding on steady.
Scott starting at Radio 2 with over 6 million listeners is a great start for him and shows how early doors how he has been able to emerge strong with the media and social media criticism don’t think things in the immediate next year will be as bad for Radio 2.
Seems that Greatest Hits is continuing on the up almost at 4 million when comes after the next two quarters it could grow quite largely. What it could achieve over the next two years and how it laments itself as an established name will be interesting to watch the growth. Wonder how Bauer will inevitably with its growth to consider how to position Absolute to Greatest Hits could Absolute 80’s come become Greatest Hits 80’s making an obvious fit for the brand. Think Cooper maybe playing a more successful long game at Bauer than had with Radio 1. For future industrial growth Bauer assume will grow faster than the BBC and Global and that could come from rapid growth in revenue and listenership. As a senior content director at Bauer think Cooper is in much stronger position in making growing radio network. But has concerns in putting all of its eggs in one basket.

It would be odd if Rylan did it if they wanted a presenter passionate about playing whats on the playlist the more dance poppy stuff and the throwbacks that go to the more nineties stuff he woudl fit what the stations going for. But woudl be odd that daytime presenters Rickie, Melvin, Charlie, Greg and Adele would be older than him. He would be able to manage a couple of decades if it worked. But it would allow for peoples argument of Radio 2 being like Radio 2 closer

I do think Edith Bowman woudl be great with proper show for her own an evening show if they do ever move Jo Whiley and Trevor Nelso she would be good in either slot liked her on Virgin Radio I think  shes great play of playing a wide range of music. She could easily be used as cover on 6 Music hope they do give her a show soon.

Oh Gawd, I hope not ... Edith Bowman was great doing 'Sounds Of The 80's' last night, so gave me a glimmer of hope for Oooo Gary Davies to get the daytime gig ........

I think from the article it paints a picture that maybe the BBC was happy to see him go and felt ok with not having his contract renewed of course its spun a few issues into the mix but with the reports of error meaning they didn’t get the timing right for contract renewal I know its could be reading in between the lines and writing ones conclusion that isnt there but they didn’t seem keen on keeping him there. If as BBC Radio 2 saw the departure of Steve Wright’s ‘big show’ presenters from MistaJam, Simon Mayo to Venessa Feltz being poached for commercial sector and dead set on keeping him you would’ve ensured his contract renewal and reassured him that he would stay on. Eventhough. Loads of BBC stars are still there that said it doesn’t go without saying that stars like Scott Mills get offers that he could’ve gone for but turned down. In the end it didn’t seem that its the station for Ken Bruce as the station plays more contemporary dance-pop which given the generation that grew up around Radio 1’s early days of going to Ibiza and playing stuff from house, trance and garage are in late 40s to 50s. So it makes sense with Tiesto and David Guetta in their fifties think with Radio 2 its now has as said and been around with it before has the issue of the ageing population and trying to serve the middle age population and its setting into. Think for the listeners of Radio 2 since the 80s and 90s when they would play older music and assume would’nt dare to play more dance poppy music of what Radio 1 at the time would play. Think it’s more the Radio 2’s older listeners and figures like Bruce gradually fell out of love with the station. If you aren’t nostalgic its easier to evolve and move with the times. Think Radio 2 doesn’t want to be stuck in time when Greatest Hits Radio offers that

The Comments section is hilarious - They are torn between decrying the 'death' of Radio 2, and decrying Ken Bruce himself for being a wimp with his 'unloved' comment ...

To be fair to Chris Moyles it was his show and think when each person on the show has a certain role or position on the show it works best as Moyles was the captain you had your newsreader, sports reader, producers, comedy cohost with two people it works well when are equals but when got three presenters doing the same role it can get bit messy and crowded if there isn’t an obvious balance for things to set in place. For presenters like Moyles, Mills, Wright etc. who do the zoo format the zoo keeper keeps the crowd in order and has a clear format that makes simple sense to a listener. They had the confidence and the direction to make it work with the producers and controllers. For me I find that Dance Anthems has the lack of importance to tune into these days miss having features and different things to connect the songs to show its a thought out curation. Seems too much of just playing tracks that listed up on the computer with nothing more to it.

Also listened to bits of Rickie, Charlie and Melvin whilst at work earlier for the first time. Wasn't too taken up on them tbh. Lots of laughing at not much, pushing the mic limiter into the red and talking over one another. Charlie does OK on her own with dance anthems. I get the zoo format as Moyles used to have it especially on drive time, but it has to be pulled off correctly.
Jordan North as per has been great when I've heard him. Used to listen to his old weekend show in my old job and he's just as good if not better, he's tailor made for the big shows. If anyone can step into the main role, it's him.
Its hard for me to think of Greg James coming to the end of his time at Radio 1 though. He's still young to me, and it feels like he only started there a moment ago from student radio. Although he's 37, he's feels more like an older brother to the whippersnappers. Different to when Moyles left, and to younger listeners at that time who saw him as that "millenium shock jock from 10 years ago when I was in primary school".
Saying that Mark and Lard were doing a daytime radio 1 show until their mid 40s, winning sony golds. And then there's what Scott did, which is another level altogether. Like I said, Greg has a good few years there yet imo.

Yes think Aled rightly so sees the value in not thinking one singular presenter is essential to the station or he should and think the family of presenters with a mix of programming that evolves and ever cog is equally of value and worth as the last. That’s the most important thing treating everyone of equal worth.

As much as I think Greg is wonderful - I actually don't think he is absolutely essential to Radio 1.  The next generation is very ready, Jordan is a breakfast show presenter in waiting, with or without Katie (or Vick), Jack Saunders could easily take it on if it wasn't Jordan.  Matt and Mollie or Rickie, Melvin and Charlie could easily be shorter term replacements.
Meanwhile, we have James Cusack, Sam and Danni and Emil Franchi all without regular shows and perfectly capable of one.
There's really no shortage of future talent at Radio 1 at present.

May be a risk but Mark Radcliffe and Marc Riley on the old 2!? I can dream... Both are too into their own thing now.
I think Greg has a good few years left at Radio 1. I recall him when he first joined and not to say he was bad around 07/08 way but he's come such a long way. He was brilliant the day after the Queen died. The way he connected with listeners and reflected himself on air. Haven't heard anything on that level since Mark Radcliffe & Chris Moyles on the day and days after of 9/11.
I simply think it's more of a Radio 1 thing than 2 with him. They can't afford to lose him at the moment. Scott going was always going to happen, but Greg can't leave until the next generation is properly ready.

I wouldn't want Rylan to move for purely selfish reasons, as I like listening to his Saturday afternoon, he really does suit that slot.

Dermot O' Leary is clearly being set up with Alison Hammond for the main This Morning role, which I get a feeling will be sooner rather than later.
The bigger question to consider is some of the names mentioned, would they even want to do it? Dermot, Rylan, Claudia, Vernon all have TV gigs... so might not want to juggle both.

Haha and you hit on my contradiction as I'd love Rylan to get it just to annoy the people who dislike him for totally awful reasons.
My reason for not wanting to get him is that I just don't like his style of presenting..
Totally believe the choice should be evolution not revolution.

Now the 'Gammons' really would be fuming at that - I hope that doesn't spur the decision-makers on to do it! - Because, yes, it would be awful.

Cant see him being sacked just don’t see him staying years longer beyond that think he may find it will run its course by next year it would be six years of doing breakfast next year. Think he may end up wanting natural change. This year he will turn 38 and that was the age Chris Moyles left. Think he may want to without being pushed may want to do the smart decision to bow out before it being elongating it more than it should and be in form on his way out and have planned exit. Being the same age as Nick when he left it puts doubt on him having a much longer tenure that would be years.

I agree with the point that Radio 2 is a huge offer, and one that would have to be considered if it was offered. I can't help thinking that Greg at this point in his career also has other options though; he is so versatile that he is not necesarily going to do the standard move from R1 to R2 in my opinion. His other podcasts for example, show he has an interest in exploring other types of work, and I'm not convinced he would want to make the move if he was offered it.
At the same time, I imagine the backlash would be enormous if it did happen. The boss of R2 would surely be taking a huge risk in making that offer, for another youngster from R1 joining the crew so soon after Scott... As much as they are trying to change the feel of the station, I'm not convinced now is the time they would choose to try to get Greg on.
