Radio 1 ditching the 'Newsbeat' name

I heard a news update this afternoon and noticed there was no voiceover saying 'Newsbeat' at all. It seems they removed any use of 'Newsbeat' including at the end. Any reason why?

This is true. There's been no jingles mentioning Newsbeat during Nihal's show. It sounds a bit odd. I wouldn't bank on them not mentioning Newsbeat in their closing line though - they seem to shake it up a bit at weekends anyway.

Usually at the end the news reader says 'Radio 1 Newsbeat...' but I was sure she said something like 'that's your news update...' Plus the jingle at the beginning didn't say 'Newsbeat' either.

Well it sounded stupid to me because she just used the same 2 jingles. As for the ending, we can't say for sure if they are altering it permanently because that might be something Debbie Randall decided to do, or to test the water to see which ending will sound best if they are changing it.

It would seem they are short staffed in the newsroom. They even used Rod Mckensie as a reporter, they've also sent Debbie Randall straight off the weekend shift and put her on a plane to Majorca and they've brought Sam Naz in. Maybe it's august holidays coupled with Swine flu?

1xtra and Radio 1 shared news all weekend. That's why they never said Radio 1 on anything.

If you listen again to 1xtra news you'll hear it. They used the 1xtra intro then just cut to newsbeat for the rest of the news.

Bit of a delicate operation from the people who struggle to the sort news when it's a pre-record!
