One Night With Laura Webchat

In April 2006, as part of the Scott Mills Show's One Night With Laura tour, she did a webchat for Radio 1 Online. Here's the transcript...

Andrew Dawes: Have you met anyone that you really like yet?

Laura: The guy that I met in Southampton, the eventual winner James, I really fancy him looks wise. But yesterday's winner made me laugh to the point I almost let a bit of wee out! There's different things coming out from the various applicants. I'm not looking for one thing in particular at all.

Jono off of Unofficial Mills: How bizarre has One Night with Laura been for you?

Laura: Goodmornin Jono! Really really bizarre. The reality of seeing the bus, with that massive picture of me on, and also seeing the audition room - I was gob smacked!

Paul R: How shocked would you be if you actually got a decent fella out of these shenanigans?

Laura: That's a tricky one - we've got three more places to go to and I'm very happy with the choices so far. I'm really hopeful that the next three will be great. So there's a high chance that I might find Mr Right!

Richard: Laura, do you prefer masculine men or those in touch with their feminine side?

Laura: I prefer men that are slightly past their best and slightly overweight. There's room for everybody - I'm very accommodating!

Kushty: Do you think you'll be able to handle a long distance relationship if the winner ends up coming from Glasgow?

Laura: If the person who eventually won came from Glasgow that wouldn't be a problem at all - I love it and I'd happily spend many a weekend up there.

Beechey: Ever thought of taking up modelling?

Laura: I like a joke! But thanks very much...

Simon: What made you let Scott do this?

Laura: Scott didn't make me do it - he was helping me find my Mr Right. This is something I wanted to do!

Troy: I've been told I'm good looking and I'm funny but I still find it hard to find a nice woman, is there something missing, not sure what I'm doing wrong, any hints or pointers?

Laura: I think that if you're just yourself and you're honest and slightly more confident in talking to people - perhaps that's the first step to getting a lovely lady? I'm sure you're a lovely, lovely guy and not doing anything wrong.

Mark: Do you think there should be another tour called One Night with Mills?

Laura: I thought there should be a One Night with Chappers - which he loved the thought of!

Scott: Do you think that with your past luck that you will have you do this all again next year (One

Night with Laura - The Return)?

Laura: I hope not! I want it all to be sorted out in a week's time. I want to be married in a month. Don't let that scare you boys!

Tom: Are you confident your Dad has good taste in men?

Laura: My dad has been so random. He's been spot on with some of them but completely off the mark with others. I feel really sorry for the auditioners because he's firing the most random questions at them ever!

Marti H: Have you been happy with the judges decisions so far? Is there Anyone you wanted in but everyone has said no!

Laura: I think Chappers is putting through anyone who is slightly quirky. Scott's kind of been the most accurate, I think. He's really been thinking about people that would get on with me. Then as I said my Dad is just bonkers. I wonder where I get it from?!

Scott: Will Mary being making a guest appearance on the judging panel?

Laura: Mary WILL be making a guest appearance, yes! But keep listening to find out when. Keep it locked!

Richard: If you and I were lost on an island together, what could I do to keep you entertained?

Laura: I'm sure there's a LOT of things we could do. I don't know how to answer that one! You could probably tell me a joke and that would keep me laughing for hours.

sexysaz: Would you rather have had your Mum on the panel?

Laura: My Mum's been at all the auditions so far - it's kind of nice having her there but not on the panel because I can give her looks of how I'm feeling about people. She's a bit of an ally.

Sal: Do you think Chappers will last out the rest of the week - he look's miserable!

Laura: He has been miserable all week. He's actually in a really good mood this afternoon though - it's hilarious!

Sonnyy: Who annoys you most on the bus?

Laura: Chappers, he just drops his guts every morning and stinks out the bus! So I've got some ambipure - other air fresheners are available.

Ronant: Does Chappers have a diary we can hear?

Laura: No I don't think he does - he can't be bothered with all that girlie stuff. That's what he said. But I've been writing my diary on the actual tour. 2006 - The Radio 1 Years!

Davey: If you had to who would you most like to have a night out with from the tourbus?

Laura: Probably Scott, but not in a romantic way. Just cos he's my best mate!

Allan: When your lovely sister found your diary, were you angry at first?

Laura: I wasn't angry with her. When I went back home we sat there reading through it just giggling, because it is hilarious! Hilariously she destroyed any diaries that she ever wrote, so I can't find them and read them out on Radio 1!

Gordon: In the story of your life, who would play your Dad on film?

Laura: Who was the actor that played him off've Fawlty Towers? John Cleese! And Hilary Duff would play me!

Lu and Caz: How did you feel when Scott got Ben on the show?

Laura: It was a mixture of embarrassment and excitement cos obviously it was nice to hear from him again. We had some good times together!

simondean23: Would you like to go out with ben again?

Laura: No comment!

Simon: How did you get your no fear attitude? I'd love to be able to just be half as crazy as you!

Laura: Fans of the diary will know that when I first went to Uni I bought a no-fear poster that says 'don't let your fears stand in the way of your dreams' - which is really cheesy but true. I try and live my life like that.

Nathanimal: What's the funniest part of the tour so far?

Laura: Probably finding out that Scott's got an irrational fear of the word panties. He hates it! Me and him were rolling around for an hour this morning laughing about it!

Spanners: What's your biggest turn off?

Laura: People who are really over confident and think that they're all that and are sure they'll get put through. It's alright to be confident, but not slimy!

Dan: Don't you'd think you'd rather have kept a dairy?

Laura: Laura's dairy is something we could look into in the next few months! There's a feature on an American radio station called that. Fact.

Spongesteve: Would you like to do Celebrity One Night with Laura, and who would you like the celebrities to be?

Laura: That would be amazing! Dane Bowers, Antony Costa...Matt Le Blanc. Him off've Dawson's Creek - Joshua Jackson, Jacko off've Brush Strokes - Karl Howman. And Philip Schofield...and Fearne Britton's husband.

The fonz: What's your party trick?

Laura: You hear about them all the time on the radio! I can go into a very busy place with a megaphone or whoopee cushion and embarrass myself.

Noel: Deal or no deal?

Laura: Deal!

Scott: What's your favourite wine?

Laura: Pinot Grigio!

george: I'm 35, single and live with my mum, are you interested?

Laura: I could be! Maybe you need to get your own place, though :). But I'm very accommodating and I'm sure your mum's lovely.

Alan: What's your favourite meal to have cooked for you?

Laura: Meat! Last night there was a posh buffet at the hotel - and there was just meat! All different kinds! I was in meat heaven!

Adrian: What do you think is down the hatch in Lost?

Laura: I know what's there! I'm on episode 11 of the second series so I know what's there.

The bear: What's your favourite biscuit, and why?

Laura: Probably a chocolate hob nob. Me and Chappers love a good hobnob.

When you dunk them in your tea they're very sturdy and tend to stay together and not crumble into your actual mug. Other biscuits are available.

Tom1: What is your favourite song?

Laura: I like Arctic Monkeys' Mardy Bum at the moment.

Lee: Spam or olives?

Laura: Olives every time but Scott would say spam. Even though I love meat. It has to be proper meat. I love that!

Dommylove: I haven't signed up for the auditions, but I reckon I'd be perfect for you. What's your number and maybe we can meet up?

Laura: Sure - it's 07770 756 408!

Laura: Thanks for logging on!

    • I agree Scott has always been a good standalone presenter, but always better when with someone. When chappers left the radio one show it felt a different show and Chris joining was what it needed and brought new life. for the format of the radio 2 show Scott’s show fits well with the station but again, there’s the huge gap between radio1 and 2 As been said already old radio2 listeners feel it now feels too young with latest changes, yet old radio1 listeners still feel radio 2 feels too old. The inbetween stage demographic of too old for radio 1 but too young for radio 2 is still not catered for radio 2 was left to grow old with its audience for too long and to change things up now feels to try and change a brand image the right thing to do is leave it as it is and cater for that 1.5 demographic which I’m sure the new proposed 00s and 10s station will do if approved. Problem is it’s so overdue that by the time it gets off the ground these listeners are already likely to be lost and the changing image of radio2 likely to lose what it stands for as a brand with the “it’s too young now “ moving to boom and the “ it still sounds old “ crowd not able to move with their favourite presenters like Scott so finding themself on capital a radio 1.5 would have been perfect for Scott and Chris, seems unlikely but this is why I think who branding of bbc radio needs a rethink if these new stations get off ground
    • Bank Holiday Monday Schedule 6am-10am: Arielle Free in for Greg 10am-2pm: Dean & Vicky (No Rickie, Melvin & Charlie) 2pm-6pm: Vick & Jamie (No Katie) 6pm onwards: As normal.
    • Dare I say they've sounded great this past week? Very much gelling. Maybe less pressure? Seem to be having a genuinely good time and not forcing things.
    • I'm in the minority in my workplace, most of them love country music. Me, the American, does not care for it. That said, I haven't haaaaaated some of the country adjacent stuff that's been on the R1 playlist.
    • The Eurovision semi finals are on from 8 to 10pm on Tuesday 7th and Thursday 9th May with Richie Anderson. That means Sara Cox in on till 8 on those days. Saturday 11th May is Eurovision 'Super Saturday... 1-3pm Your Ultimate Abba song with Gary Davies 3-6pm Michelle Visage's Eurovision All Stars 6-8pm Eurovision Request Party with Owain Wynn Evans 8pm Eurovision Grand Final with Scott Mills and Rylan Clark
    • It is funny because everyone thought Matt was on the way out, now he's been described as the heir to Mills.
    • Some similar names to Big Weekend. Sabrina Carpenter, David Guetta, Perrie, Bradley Simpson, Jax Jones, Caity Baser, Benson Boone, Rudimental. David Guetta is a good name.
    • Still Scott for me. I'm not too much into the 70s and 80s radio 2 play but do love the injection of 90s and 00s. Then Radio 2 push for all this country stuff and it not a UK thing, and I frankly don't like it. Scott's show as in features, hit and miss. I like the music police bit, but it feels like someone needs to join him. It's a shame Chappers is so busy with sports, as it feels like it could do with someone like him jumping on to help. Or a new partner. Radio 1, take or leave. Matt and Mollie are OK from what I've heard and share a good connection, but it's the playlist that throws me off. They could bring back Chris Moyles to do that show, but as soon as something like Headie One comes on with that casino keyboard produced crap. It would still be switched off from me.
    • Reading through this thread, I don't feel quite so alone now, in thinking that Scott Mills on R2 is not a good 'fit' (even less so than on R5). I can't quite explain why this is so - I just know it to be so.
    • Arielle has been on holiday for the last 2 weeks getting married / honeymoon. It'll be live from this week onwards.
    • CassKidd is in for Sian on Sunday 5th May.
    • The brought to tiers feature was also very good from them. I did wonder which DJ's were going to get picked out of the hat, that could have gone one way or the other and the caller said they were very opinionated lol. Correct decision putting katie in god tier!
    • The extended Dua Lipa track from M&M was very funny. I'm hoping Matt and Mollie and Scott have a good relationship a bit like Greg and Zoe collaborate on-air sometimes.
    • Gary Davies in for Vernon Kay tomorrow (Monday 29th April).
