Good day, it's another week, and the final week of the afternoon show till Breakfast. So I think you must be here to find out what happened on today's show, so let's get down to the nitty gritty...

Unofficial Mills - 3 Million Hits last month, let's create another record this month!

Chappers is back tomorrow, he's returning with his tail between his legs when he gets off the plane which is currently travelling on. I'm quite looking forward to his return, he's been away so long you forget how important he is to the show!

Meanwhile Laura is on the South-East coast waiting for David Walliam's swim for Sport Relief. Scott wants to know how close Laura and David have got, as they've been sharing a hotel room together. Scott wants some more hot girls in flip flops walking along a beach to pour some water over themselves for a picture for Radio 1 Online to get there before the Daily Star. Other newspapers are available. An hour later and the photographs Laura sent in received a big g'mornin' from the team. Scott recalled an event in October where the show team were trying to guess who David Walliams would be linked with next. One guy at the time had e-mailed in saying Laura, which doesn't seem to be far from the truth.

Record of the Week

This week's Record of the Week reminds me of The Magic Numbers. It's Captain, and they've had a bit of Radio 1 airplay before. They're back with their new single 'Glorious'.

The new going through people's iPod this week is the new going through people's phones. Imagine going through your boyfriend's MP3s or CDs and finding Steps, Aqua, the Spice Girls and S Club. One caller said her friend/partner (we're not sure) only had three albums, those three being by Will Young. His excuse was that it was a new iPod and he had no time for putting more music on. But when she went round round his house, he had a Will Young DVD, he had a 'Vote Will' t-shirt and he wants her to go to two nights to see Will Young. She reassures us that he's not gay though. Save it for the courts...

Lloyd was back on, feeling down from the weekend. He was very upset and evencried on Saturday. Scott wanted to know how Lloyd knew about the people in his pub who were gutted, and were with him. Lloyd's response was that Scott's always in the pub, which is rather true. Lloyd didn't think Rooney should have been sent off, and he thinks Scott should support Europe, as a continent, not as a particular team. More poetry, and iPod discussion. On Lloyd's MP3 player is the podcasts, some Robbie, RHCPs and some Bee Gees. Whatever floats your boat.

It's a puppet!

Scott saw a show called 'Avenue Q' in London this weekend, which is like Sesame Street for older people. He managed to snog a blue puppet backstage as well. Lucky him. He wasn't happy with the comments on the forum that he'd "copped off" with the puppet, it was just a peck, apparently.

Lots of talk of fashion disasters today - including guys in sandals, and a petition is being made for some teachers to be allowed to wear sandals. What a no-no! Think of the children! Elsewhere Scott had a rather nice white shirt on today which many forum members were quite wanting, or wanting off, depending on whether you have the hots for him.

Flirt Divert

Today's Flirt Diver caught a real catch called Archie who's been to New York working with Destiny's Child. Hadn't they split up? He then rang back with his mobile phone number, due to the jet lag he'd forgotten. Loads of people claim they knew Archie. Some claim he's actually an estate agent, others think he's a life guard. By the way, 07770 756 408 if you need it for your phone.

Another guy was on at 6.15 saying he was loving the Wonder Years tonight. I'm not sure what's up with him, he might have been Listening Again, or he was just finding tonight's music rather good. The Wonder Years, of course, airs Friday Nights and not on a Monday night. Are you finding certain people more attractive today because of the heat? Scott certainly was, and so was John on the forum! There were also plenty of listeners (sounding rather minging) revealing they're actually naked listening to the show, one guy was even ironing - that could be painful.

Nikki vs Scott Mills

Continuing the idea that Nikki does appear to be the new Scott Mills in female form, last night I can report Nikki got very stressed when she was unable to turn on her iPod which she was struggling to work. Merely reporting the facts, m'lord. But who is the poshest and funniest whilst drunk? Work it out for yourself with my poll and sound file. Click here for the forum topic, just don't tell Scott!

Wake up with Moyles, Get Home with Mills

Final Thoughts

Quite liked today's show, some good forum banter and it's good to see a few comments were picked up by Scott. Tune in tomorrow for more from Scott, Laura and Chappers. Let's hope she's not hiring that boat out by the minute or the bill at the end will be quite pricy!

• As a member of the LGBTQ+ community my position is exactly yours on female representation. Yes I want representation but only on merit. Even if Radio 1 would like more representation from this sector, there are stacks of better options than Danny Beard.
    • I hope you're right! I remember some years ago hearing that the biggest show at a weekend was mid-mornings, but not sure if that's changed with the changing pattern of radio listening in general. Given the best show at the weekend (by a distance) is M&M, would make sense that's now the biggest slot.
    • Someone on here said recently weekend afternoons have a big audience. I think you'd want some of your biggest talent here. Which is why there was talk of a reshuffle. I couldn't personally see Danny in this slot if they decided to keep him.
    • I understand that representation is important. And I can't speak for the LGBTQ+ community. But, as a woman in my mid 30s, I have seen a massive shift towards 'having more women' in every industry/organisation in my lifetime. I have always felt that it should be on merit and capability to carry out a role effectively, rather than just filling a role as a specific gender. Women can be fantastic at everything, but on a personal level I would not want to be hired, for example, as a firefighter just because I was the only female candidate. I am 5 foot nothing and could not carry you out of a burning building.
    • If they were going to do this, wouldn’t it make more sense to keep Danny at 10.30am and move Nat and Vicky to 1pm? I feel the idea of giving someone a job largely because of their sexuality isn’t particularly good either…
    • Right so prediction time. I think “Summer on Radio 1” which is on the schedule for Friday to Sunday 1-4 from June sticks around longer than the other changes in July. I think that lasts until September which is when we get the new weekend afternoon show. I think they’ll want to give Danny longer on air to see if they improve. I can’t see that happening, so my guess is in September they move Sam & Danni to weekend afternoons (at that point they’ll have been on weekend breakfast for a full year), and they bring James Cusack in to do weekend breakfast.
    • If Aled decides to give Danny a full time role, even as part of a duo / trio, it'll be the most disappointing decision of his tenure. The fact Danny is still on air and hasn't been quietly moved on 'due to a change in plan' is bad enough!
    • I'd say Danny has been given a fair hearing - and hasn't been up to par. You don't want Radio 1 to be a closed shop - but not being able to usually get the Whatsapp number right should be a dealbreaker. Errors happen even to the best DJs at times but if you can't get the Whatsapp number right you really shouldn't have a regular role on the station. But if they really are that desperate to have Danny on the schedule full-time then pair him up with somebody who can actually handle the technical side. You think of all the capable DJs who are in duos and trios and then you have just have a rookie like Danny left solo. The LGBTQ+ point too I have to say if true as a gay man feels a case of proper discrimination. It's good to have LGBTQ+ representation for sure but the key thing is that the DJ is good at the end of the day and say in 2021 there was loads of LGBTQ+ talent on Radio 1 in Scott, Grimmy and Adele Roberts among others but at the end of the day they were strong DJs entirely there on merit. And even now there's still LGBTQ+ talent on Radio 1 who are there primarily because they're bloody good broadcasters. Danny is not one of them.
    • There is a reason you don't know who is doing weekend afternoons yet. The plan is still to see how Danny Beard's trial goes on weekend mornings. Newspaper clippings have demonstrated Aled has been keen to push Danny Beard at the weekend and to give him a fair hearing. The plan looks to be to wait and see whether he improves in the next few weeks. The bosses still want more LBGTQ+ representation on the station.
    • I think they should just bring that back as was. It's been nearly 20 years, so do it with a whole bunch of new DJ's.
    • I think this year has taught us we know nothing 🙂 Nobody would ever have credibly predicted Jordan leaving and all the changes that followed. I have another interest outside radio and it is exactly the same - the stuff you never expect to happen is exactly what does.
    • Yeah they make the weekend shifts go so much quicker. Like today, the piece about Matt falling asleep in the cafe was funny, it's clear to see why they're going to weekdays. It could well be they were thinking of Danny for it and like you say have decided against that, or like I said at the start it's James Cusack and the slow down on the announcement is him getting out of his contract. Remember he works for radio 1's main rivals. I think it's quite telling that he's doing more r1 cover than usual, tomorrow and then a further 3 weekend shows in a row
    • Nat in for Dean with Vicky between the 28th-30th May.
    • I suspect they’re gonna tie the announcement into something, or they’ve changed plans. I know we’ve said it as a joke but I wonder if Aled was planning on giving it to someone like Danny Beard, but he’s decided against that after the last few weeks. Seems clear to me, though, that if Jordan hadn’t left, then Katie would’ve taken Dean and Vicky’s slot and Matt and Mollie would’ve stayed on weekends, which probably explains why they haven’t picked a replacement yet. If it was going to be the obvious choice, I.e. James Cusack, surely they would’ve announced it by now..?
    • Yep think they mentioned that this is their penultimate weekend of shows but then they will also be on air during Big Weekend and they mentioned they'll be doing 'Party Anthems' on stage during Big Weekend which sounds intriguing. Will miss Matt & Mollie on weekends - they in particular have made that Friday afternoon slot their own - but they'll be great on weekdays. Do wonder if 'Summer on Radio 1' is just a placeholder name until they decide on who will cover the interim. While it's obviously not the case it does feel like they've forgotten there's that weekend afternoon slot to fill given no permenant presenter has been announced for it yet.
