Freshers' flu meets a blender
Chris tries to repair his fading voice after the freshers tour by buying kale, cucumber, celery, apples and limes. The blender has returned from beneath the sink, although Scott doubts that one virtuous morning will reverse the previous week.
They also remain fascinated by Britney Spears's British television appearances. Her visit to Loose Women produces a personalised mug and the question of whether its presenters really are “loose women”, extending Chris's renewed [...]
Calvin Harris finds one perfect word
Scott and Chris recover from a weekend of freshers events by catching up with The X Factor. Calvin Harris has appeared at Nicole Scherzinger's judges' house, apparently ending the exile that followed his old pineapple protest during Jedward's performance.
His expression gives little away, but his verdict on almost every singer is remarkably consistent: “fantastic”. Scott decides this is simply Calvin's screen-saver face rather than proof that he wants to leav [...]
Busted were back on Radio 1 today - and played a round of Funny Business on the show too. [...]
Craig David delivers the chocolate
Radio 1's unpredictability is demonstrated when Craig David walks into the studio, gives Scott a quick hug and hands him an enormous bar of chocolate without explanation. Craig appears to be distributing several bars around the building, making him an unexpectedly early Father Christmas.
Scott soon knocks water across the desk during one of his particularly clumsy days. Elsewhere, Chris finds a job advert for an executive assistant whose duties include playing [...]
Gogglebox enters the wet area
Chris Steed and Stephen Webb from Gogglebox play Innuendo Bingo. Their familiarity with television makes the clips particularly effective, and both bring the commentary and expressions that normally accompany their sofa appearances into the wet studio.
The round includes excitable broadcasters, Lorraine receiving an unexpected surprise from Levi Roots and increasingly impossible wording from daytime programmes. Scott feels that he already knows the pair through tele [...]
Pleasure at the hairdressers
Ahead of Britney Spears's visit, Chris asks whether it is acceptable to close his eyes during a salon head massage. In an unfamiliar hairdresser he briefly enjoys the shampoo before remembering that a stranger is touching him and reopening one eye.
Scott says the massage is part of the service and should be enjoyed, but draws the line at Chris groaning to reassure the worker that they are doing a good job. Chris previously used the same technique during a full-body m [...]
A very wet creative lecture
Scott speaks at a radio festival inside the British Library about creativity, then demonstrates the principle by making Chris and Matt Fincham play Innuendo Bingo. Critics, executives and senior BBC figures initially appear uncertain, but gradually warm to the spectacle.
Only three clips are required, including a BBC West Midlands bird discussion that sounds considerably less innocent in the reading room. Chris immediately imagines a Bingo world tour through the O2, R [...]
The red emergency telephone
Scott and Chris cover Friday Breakfast, prompting several people to check that Scott has remembered to wake up. His solution is a red landline marked “emergency”, whose number is known only to a few colleagues and managers.
The phone should succeed when Scott's silent mobile, forgotten alarms or misplaced handset fail. He is already worried that distributing the number will attract PPI calls, but accepts it as a necessary defence against another missed Breakfast appea [...]
Helen Skelton returns to Bingo
Helen Skelton removes her watch and joins Chris for an exceptionally wet Innuendo Bingo. The clips cover Rio's discoloured swimming pool, Val's wetter mixture on The Great British Bake Off, the wording of “The Owl and the Pussy-cat” and an unfortunate choice in The Chase.
Helen recalls taking the highest offer during her own appearance on The Chase, despite the audience wanting caution. She survives the clips with the same competitive approach, while Scott prematur [...]
Chris needs a toilet, not Grand Designs
Scott worries that Chris looks pale after weeks living in a house with neither kitchen nor bathroom. The barbecue remains his main cooking appliance, while his attempt to rent portable toilets has proved unexpectedly expensive.
Chris contacts Kevin McCloud for help, but Scott says the project is several levels below Grand Designs and requires Nick Knowles instead. They distract themselves with a celebration of Beaconsfield services, where a caller has deli [...]
