Scott Mills has just announced on the breakfast show that BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend is coming to Carlisle for 2011! The event will take place at Carlisle Airport on Saturday 14th May 2011 and Sunday 15th May 2011. Keep listening to BBC Radio 1 as well as keeping an eye on our Twitter feed to find out more about who is playing this year's event. You know what really grinds my gears? How the Big Weekend over the last eleven years has failed to hit the Eastern region. This map shows how Radio 1 has settled for many central locations since Radio 1's Big Weekend begun. It also has notably favoured sites closer to the existing mainstream festivals such as Reading, Leeds, Glastonbury and V. Wasn't the Big Weekend's mission statement to go to towns further away from those sort of events? The East consistently misses out on events t [...]
Scott Mills has said he feared for his life while filming a documentary for BBC3 about homosexuality in Uganda. During the making of the documentary he met MP David Bahat, a politician trying to push through new laws to punish gay people. Things turned nasty when Scott explained to the MP he was gay, and asked for an explanation for his views. Both the film crew and Scott fled, but the ordeal didn't end there, and armed police turned up at his hotel. Mills told Pink News: "It's just [...]
As the furore over Rihanna's S&M continues to dominate the news today, BBC Radio 1 finally chose to the play the song in full during the daytime. Despite previously banning the song from the playlist and waiting for a censored version of the song before playing it, the station took a u-turn earlier. The song was played out during Fearne Cotton's morning show - at a time when producers believed most children were at school and would not be listening. According to Radio 1's Newsbeat t [...]
As we reported earlier last month, Scott Mills will be at the forefront of this year's Comic Relief activity, as he takes part in a 100km trek across the Kenyan desert. He will take part in the gruelling challenge along with eight other celebrities including Olly Murs, Kara Tointon, Dermot O'Leary, and Lorraine Kelly in two weeks' time. For five days the group will be hoping to avoid the world's deadliest snakes - as well as combating temperatures of up to 38C - so there'll be no need for [...]
Rihanna is raging after hearing BBC Radio 1 play a new censored version of S&M - which was finally allowed a play after a short ban on the track. The song was given a play under a new name of "Come On" by Reggie Yates during this week's chart show when it charted at Number 20. The lyrics including "sex in the air" and "chains and whips excite me"were edited to make it worthy of a play during the day. The letters"S&M" have, of course, also been removed. The station had originally [...]
The RAJARs are out today - the way audience figures are measured for radio - and it's good news for Chris Moyles and his breakfast show figures. In the fourth quarter of 2010 The Chris Moyles Show had 7.45m listeners a week - up from 7.1m in the third quarter of 2010 and up from 7.24m from the year 2009. BBC Radio 1 itself has an audience of 11.42m a week, which is down compared with the third quarter, but it is up on the last year. Listeners tuned in for less time, but has an 8.8% share o [...]
"Scott Bills strikes again" joked Mills on Wednesday as he talked about an event that happened in America a little while ago where he borrowed one of Robbie Williams' cars. Scott had been in America when he met up with Robbie and offered one of his cars for a couple of days instead of using a hire car firm. The DJ took up the offer - despite a history of accidentally racking up some unpaid traffic fines in the past - and used the car while in the states. Unfortunately the story doesn't [...]
Scott Mills' documentary World's Worst Place to be Gay? will air on BBC Three at 9pm on 14th February 2011. The documentary saw Scott visit Uganda which has been branded one of the most dangerous places to be a homosexual on earth. One reporter who has seen a preview of the documentary said he programme made her "want to shout at the television" while at other times made her "want to cry". Mills spent two weeks in Uganda last November filming this documentary, and previews of the show h [...]
It's not unexpected but BBC Radio 1 have banished Rihanna's latest song from the playlist refusing to play it during the daytime. Based on the name of single - S&M - you might have a good idea what the song will be about, and the video and lyrics does nothing to detract from that belief: "Sticks and stones, may break my bones, but chains and whips excite me." MTV have considered a re-edit, most of Southern Asia have banned it completely and BBC Radio 1 bosses won't add it to the pla [...]
