16 November 2021: Coventry got Big Weekend — and Kylie and Ashley got almost everyone on Brother or Lover

Big Weekend was going to Coventry

Radio 1 had announced Coventry as the home of Big Weekend 2022.

Scott and Chris immediately began preparing.

Chris had DJed there before.

Scott remembered nights out.

The pair reminisced about an enormous all-you-can-eat buffet which seemed to contain every cuisine imaginable.

Then Chris began reading facts from the internet.

Scott stopped him.

Anyone could read Wikipedia.

The show wanted the real Coventry.

Listeners supplied the facts tourist guides do not

Messages arrived with the kind of information only local people carry.

Which places have disappeared.

Which car parks somebody’s mum now refuses to use because her car was once stolen there.

Which venues had legendary reputations.

Which bits of the city people actually talk about rather than the things appearing in official visitor copy.

Big Weekend had given Radio 1 an excuse to start building an informal Coventry guide months in advance.

Kylie and Ashley arrived for Brother or Lover

Kylie, from Eastbourne, was working as a community carer while studying towards university and midwifery.

She introduced Ashley.

The team had to determine whether Ashley was her brother or boyfriend.

Ashley said the last gift he bought Kylie was a pint of lager.

The pair went paddleboarding.

Kylie sometimes joined Ashley while he walked his dog.

Their last day out had been to Fright Nights at Thorpe Park.

They hardly ever spoke on the phone because Kylie hated phone calls and preferred texting.

Most of the clues sounded sibling-like

Ashley had previously coached rugby.

Kylie did not sound particularly romantic when talking about him.

The pub gift hardly screamed Valentine’s Day.

Their activities sounded like things close siblings could easily do together.

A large part of the team locked in brother.

The reveal:

lover.

Ashley and Kylie were a couple.

They had managed the game exactly as intended.

Scott had been completely taken in.

Big Weekend Real or No Real reopened festival history

Don’t Look It Up used old Big Weekend stories.

Had security once mistaken Vick Hope for an overenthusiastic fan around Greg James?

Had Lorde accidentally greeted Hull as Southampton?

The round mixed genuine festival chaos with things producer Amy had invented minutes earlier.

Scott also remembered once being escorted out of his own DJ area because security did not believe he was meant to be there.

Big Weekend had not even arrived in Coventry yet.

The archive was already supplying enough material for the next one.
