12 February 2019: Nicole came back as Radio 1 uncovered the ultimate snake

Nicole returned from Pontypridd

Listeners had been asking what had happened to Nicole, one of the programme’s favourite callers from 2018.

Nicole had previously never been on a plane before boyfriend Liam took her to Amsterdam.

Her questions about air travel, including whether there were traffic lights in the sky, had made her instantly memorable.

Now she was back.

Scott asked what was new.

Nicole’s answer was gloriously ordinary.

She had been going out.

Mostly to Wetherspoons.

Scott thought of Spoons as somewhere people began a night.

Nicole regarded it as the whole night.

She loved it.

Nicole wanted Reading Festival

The conversation moved to holidays and plans.

Nicole said she wanted to go to Reading Festival but was not sure her work colleague would join her.

Scott told her national radio was the ideal place to make a case.

Nicole attempted a short pitch explaining why she should be there.

It was not especially persuasive.

Scott still liked the idea of involving her in more Radio 1 things.

The call became the start of another long-running Nicole storyline rather than a one-off update.

Finstas exposed the less polished Instagram

The show also discussed Finstas, the second Instagram accounts people used away from their public, polished profile.

One account might contain good lighting, holidays and carefully selected photographs.

The other showed the ordinary or embarrassing version of life.

Listeners admitted keeping both.

Scott understood why the private account could feel more honest.

He was less clear why anybody needed a personal brand strategy complicated enough to require two versions of themselves.

Charlotte nominated the ultimate snake

Then an anonymous caller, given the name Charlotte, nominated the man she had been seeing.

The pair had met at the gym and dated for around three months.

Charlotte had begun to suspect he was also seeing somebody else.

She contacted that woman through Facebook.

Radio 1 called her too, disguising her voice and using the name Maria.

Maria had also suspected something was wrong.

The two women compared information.

Their timelines overlapped.

The same man had effectively been maintaining two relationships.

The women decided not to fight each other

Maria made an important point.

Rather than blame one another, the two women had decided to work together.

Both believed the man had lied to them.

They started planning a confrontation for that evening.

Maria would arrange to meet him.

Charlotte would arrive unexpectedly.

Scott and Chris could hardly believe the feature had moved from naming a zoo snake to organising what sounded like the final scene of a romantic drama.

They asked both women to call back the following day.
