2 August 2018: Paul Rudd played Did You Do Bits? as Anne-Marie taught Scott karate

Anne-Marie became Scott’s karate instructor

Scott’s morning had begun in an actual karate studio with Anne-Marie.

Before becoming a pop star, she had competed seriously in karate, so Scott was put into a white uniform and given a practical lesson.

The training included nunchucks and work with a belt.

Scott said the clean white outfit initially made the whole thing feel slightly like arriving at a spa.

That impression did not last once the martial-arts lesson properly started.

Anne-Marie told him he had done well for a first session and seemed especially pleased that he had attempted the nunchucks.

Scott had not suddenly decided that the two of them were going to start attending weekly fitness classes together.

The unusual morning had been arranged for a specific recording.

It still left him with the unexpected experience of beginning a Radio 1 working day by being trained in karate by the singer of “2002” and “Ciao Adios”.

Two nights became three months

The programme then returned to the problem of friends or relatives who asked to stay temporarily and never seemed to leave.

An anonymous caller was given a disguised voice and the name “Geraldine”.

A relative arrived at her house with bicycles and announced that they needed somewhere to stay for a few nights.

They had not really asked in advance.

Geraldine agreed.

The promised few nights became three months.

The relative was not contributing much to bills or household costs and appeared increasingly comfortable.

Geraldine found it too awkward to directly tell them to leave.

Her husband eventually chose a much more drastic solution.

He got rid of the sofa they had been using and replaced it with garden furniture.

Deckchairs appeared where comfortable living-room seating had previously been.

The message finally worked.

Scott thought disposing of your own sofa rather than telling somebody they had outstayed their welcome was extreme, but it also demonstrated just how difficult people found that conversation.

Paul Rudd entered the world of “bits”

Scott and Chris had recorded an interview with Paul Rudd for *Ant-Man and the Wasp* before Chris went away.

They introduced him to Did You Do Bits?

The format gave Paul only a stranger’s voice, age and a few pieces of information.

He then had to decide whether that person had been romantically successful the previous night.

Alice, 24, said her date-night song would be DJ Khaled and Rihanna’s “Wild Thoughts”.

Paul thought she had done bits.

She had not.

Then came Piz, a project manager who said a fragrance called “Sex Panther” would turn him on rather than put him off.

Paul decided that, partly on the odds and partly on the name Piz, this man probably had done bits.

He was right.

Scott and Chris were impressed at how quickly Paul understood the game’s completely unscientific logic.

They also explained that “bits” had a different meaning from the comedy “bits” Paul was used to hearing in America.

Paul left with a piece of British Radio 1 vocabulary he was unlikely to encounter during an ordinary Marvel press interview.

Scott wanted a pint with Paul Rudd

The interview ended with Scott deciding Paul was exactly the kind of actor he would happily go for a drink with.

The promotional conversation had covered a superhero film.

The part the show remembered was Paul Rudd earnestly trying to infer somebody’s sex life from the name Piz.
