27 August 2014: Alex Gaskarth wakes to a stranger entering his hotel room

Scott wakes up as a Strictly contestant

Scott had spent the previous day in a smart shirt for his announcement and arrived wearing double denim. The excitement had given way to practical fear: now everybody knew he was taking part, he had to learn the dances.

Craig Revel Horwood had taught him the difference between a chassé and other steps, although Scott was already mixing the words together. Messages about the announcement had arrived from across Radio 1’s audience, with varying levels of confidence in his chances.

Alex Gaskarth’s 04:00 visitor

Alex Gaskarth from All Time Low dropped into the studio while writing songs for the band’s next album and for other artists. Scott had seen his overnight tweets about a frightening hotel incident.

At about 04:00, Alex heard somebody working at his door. He had forgotten to apply the extra lock, and the door opened while he was still trying to wake up. The visitor then shut it again without explaining himself.

Hotel staff discovered a homeless man asleep in the corridor. Alex could not understand how he had acquired a key, while Scott focused on the personal insult of somebody entering the room, seeing Alex and immediately deciding to leave.

Alex was in Britain without bandmate Jack Barakat, who was in France. He was using the downtime to write and regarded Radio 1 as somewhere he could visit spontaneously whenever he was in London.

All Time Low pass Normo or Not

Alex agreed to play Normo or Not. He had bought drinks for his half-sisters the previous evening, received an angry family call because he had forgotten to renew his car registration and recently had a bank card declined after failing to report overseas travel.

The answers were reassuringly ordinary. Even years of touring had not protected him from paperwork, worried parents or a card being stopped at the least convenient moment.

Chris shares beauty with Nicole

Chris’s new beauty vlog with Nicole Scherzinger was released. Her closing advice was direct: “Take a shower in the morning and change your pants.” Scott thought this was a stronger public service than anything in Chris’s own routine.

The programme also investigated what men wrote on Tinder. Borrowed dogs, claims not to want a hookup and increasingly large search radiuses all appeared. One woman screened potential dates through a family WhatsApp group before agreeing to meet them.
