Scott and Chris started 2018 on Breakfast
Scott and Chris opened the year covering the Radio 1 Breakfast Show while Grimmy was away. Their New Year’s Eve experiences had been very different. Chris hosted a party at home where his girlfriend’s mum became unexpectedly competitive over beer pong, while Scott had been DJing in Halifax.
Scott’s midnight countdown had not gone entirely to plan. The resident DJ used an audio effect intended to sound like Big Ben, but Scott thought it resembled a particularly poor karaoke version of the famous bells. The timing was awkward enough that the transition into 2018 felt rather less majestic than intended.
Celebrity Gamble produced the wrong January energy
Postwoman Hannah became the first victim of Celebrity Gamble. She could choose Scott’s guaranteed record, Deep Dish’s “Flashdance”, or gamble on a celebrity selection from Nigella Lawson, Tinie Tempah or Big Shaq.
Hannah took the gamble.
She got Nigella.
Nigella Lawson’s choice was The Archies’ “Sugar, Sugar”, which Scott and Chris agreed was a perfectly pleasant record but absolutely not the kind of energising January banger Hannah had hoped for.
Jan Slam launched with Anthony Joshua
Radio 1 also launched Jan Slam, the month-long run of major prizes designed to make January more bearable.
The first prize included two tickets to Anthony Joshua’s next UK fight and the chance to meet him at the pre-fight weigh-in. Scott and Chris used Joshua’s victory over Carlos Takam in Cardiff as the competition question and warned entrants that simply answering the question correctly would not be enough: the eventual winner would have to answer Radio 1’s returning call with a special word.
Emma Willis guarded the Celebrity Big Brother secrets
Emma Willis joined before the launch of the new series of *Celebrity Big Brother*, which was beginning with an all-female house before male contestants entered later.
Scott and Chris tried to test a long list of rumoured names, including Rachel Johnson, Sandra Martin, Sinitta and others, but Emma had become very good at giving almost nothing away.
She did reveal one change at home. Emma was attempting a sugar-free January and had removed sweets from the house, a health decision her children were apparently considerably less enthusiastic about.
