29 December 2017: James followed an affair from London to Paris and Spain

Scott and Chris ended the year on Breakfast

The final podcast of 2017 came from the Radio 1 Breakfast Show, where Scott and Chris were sitting in for Nick Grimshaw.

Christmas Day had been on Monday and, by Friday morning, the pair were already discussing how quickly the festive period seemed to be disappearing.

Chris also revealed an unconventional approach to Game of Thrones.

Instead of starting at the beginning, he had watched a few episodes from series seven, then some from series four and even dipped into series two.

He was enjoying individual episodes while possessing almost no understanding of the overall story.

Scott correctly predicted that this would horrify committed fans.

The programme also looked ahead to Radio 1’s January competition, Jan Slam. A new major prize would be revealed at 8am each day, beginning when Scott and Chris returned on Tuesday 2 January.

James had to buy a Eurostar ticket immediately

Private investigator James visited the studio in person with another real surveillance case.

A wife had hired him because she believed her husband was cheating.

James followed the man as he met another woman and travelled towards St Pancras with luggage.

When the pair headed for the Eurostar, the investigators had to make a rapid decision.

One kept sight of the couple while the other bought tickets.

The client was contacted and agreed to pay the additional expense.

James followed them all the way to Paris.

The couple checked into an expensive hotel and spent the night there, which already appeared to provide substantial evidence that the wife’s suspicions were justified.

The following day James expected them to return home.

Instead they went to the airport and flew to Spain.

The client told him to keep following.

So James and his colleague went to Spain too.

The surveillance target started talking to him

At the Spanish hotel, James positioned himself close enough to the couple in the bar to keep observing them.

They heard his British accent and started a conversation.

That left the private investigator socialising directly with the people he was secretly following.

James even brought photographs into Radio 1 showing the couple during the journey and at airports, giving Scott and Chris a rare look at the evidence generated during a real job.

Then the situation became considerably stranger.

Both the husband and the woman began flirting with James.

Eventually they invited him back to their hotel room to see the hot tub.

James called the wife who had hired him and explained that her husband was now apparently inviting the private investigator into the jacuzzi.

She was furious but told him he was there to do a job.

At that point James stopped the story.

Scott and Chris announced that listeners would have to wait until the following Friday to discover whether he accepted the invitation.

Ghostbusters and the royals returned

As the final podcast looked back at 2017, the show replayed Georgie’s December Ghostbusters case, where a man had cancelled one date and forgotten another.

They also revisited the day Prince William and Catherine visited Radio 1 with Prince Harry as part of work connected with Heads Together.

The conversation had included surprisingly ordinary subjects such as box sets, children’s television, takeaway food and the competitive running race between William, Catherine and Harry.

The final programme therefore ended with a mixture of new Breakfast material and some of the show’s favourite moments from the year.
