10 April 2018: Noah gave a gamekeeper a puppy, then got bobbed

Bobbing became breadcrumbing

The previous day’s new dating term was still generating messages.

Scott and Chris repeated their definition: a bobber disappears, then returns with something like “hey stranger” or “hope all is well”, before vanishing and potentially doing the same thing again later.

A listener said she and her friends called the behaviour breadcrumbing, because somebody left behind just enough contact for another person to follow the trail when they eventually fancied reappearing.

Then Noah called with a much more complicated example.

Noah’s bobber had acquired a dog

Noah had met a man through a dating app around September.

He worked as a gamekeeper and, as part of the job, needed a dog. By coincidence, Noah’s mum had a dog which had recently had puppies.

The relationship was still relatively new, but one of those puppies ended up going to the gamekeeper.

Then the contact changed.

After a few weeks he stopped replying properly, even though messages appeared to be read. Eventually he joined the growing collection of people who disappeared and then resurfaced.

The normal questions about whether Noah should entertain a bobber were complicated by the fact that there was now a dog connecting the two lives.

Scott became fixated on the animal.

The people involved could decide whether they wanted to see each other again, but how did the dog feel about the arrangement?

That question led directly to the following day’s attempt to find a dog whisperer.

Chris had a heart-to-heart with Sandra

Chris had also spent time with Scott’s mum, Sandra.

Scott joked that Sandra treated Chris like one of the sons she had never had, before immediately pointing out that she had, in fact, had Scott.

Their conversation brought back one of the family’s more memorable mishaps.

Scott had once left the house after double-locking the door and setting the alarm without realising Sandra was still inside. She had effectively been trapped and eventually had to deal with the situation through the door while the alarm created its own drama.

This time Sandra had her own key, making a repeat considerably less likely.

The Who Game returned

The Who Game made its first appearance of 2018.

It was one of the programme’s deliberately fast, slightly chaotic games, built around prompts designed to reveal generational differences and trigger memories of old trends, objects and television.

The questions moved through things including gel pens, jelly bracelets, smoking on aeroplanes, old television references and other things which divided people depending on their age.

Scott and Chris were pleased simply to have the feature back, but the real unfinished business from the show was Noah’s dog.

If the animal was going to become part of the dating story, Scott wanted somebody who could supposedly speak for it.
