2 April 2024: Scott returns after five weeks and faces a Charity Shop Sue disciplinary

Scott returns

Scott returned to the afternoon programme after an absence of around five weeks.

Listeners immediately asked where he had been, while Scott said he had been dealing with wedding planning and other commitments.

The welcome back did not remain gentle for long.

Charity Shop Sue’s intervention

Charity Shop Sue appeared unexpectedly less than 20 minutes into the programme.

She said the BBC had sent her to conduct a disciplinary because Scott had been away for too long.

Sue claimed to have investigated his social media and accused him of combining an “icky tum” with DJ appearances in Marbella and private functions in Dubai.

She demanded to know what Scott would do to prevent another absence.

Scott promised not to take any more holiday during the year and said he would be present every weekday from 2pm until 4pm.

Sue also warned that he would need to make up the missing hours.

The surprise left Scott laughing, confused and genuinely unsure what was coming next.

The Birthday Game: Matt

Matt worked as a research scientist at the University of Liverpool.

He used electron microscopes to study structures and materials at extremely small scales.

His work had included looking at the arrangement of crystals in bone and examining a piece of meteorite around a billion years old.

Matt played the first Birthday Game after Scott’s return and welcomed him back to the programme.

Sheridan Smith

Sheridan Smith joined Scott at 3.30.

The programme joked about a fictional ITV drama concerning Scott’s disappearance before turning to Sheridan’s actual work.

She discussed returning to demanding dramatic roles and the emotional intensity she brought to performances.

Scott highlighted her ability to move between television drama, comedy, theatre and musical performance.

Charity Shop Sue’s verdict

Sue’s appearance continued to dominate listener messages.

Some described it as an intervention, while others agreed that Scott needed to be held accountable for disappearing from the afternoon schedule.

The mock disciplinary became the defining moment of his first show back.

Handover

Scott handed over to Sara Cox after his return, Sheridan Smith’s visit and Charity Shop Sue’s surprise confrontation.
