3 April 2024: Nemo, Snap and the first steps towards Malmö

The road to Malmö

With just over a month to go until Eurovision, Scott began introducing listeners to some of the acts heading to Sweden.

The first was Nemo, representing Switzerland with The Code.

Nemo said the response had gone far beyond anything expected when the song was released.

Messages from trans and non-binary listeners who connected with its story had been particularly moving.

The Code

Scott noted the song’s theatrical scale and its mixture of styles.

Nemo laughed at one description comparing it with Freddie Mercury returning to make K-pop, while making clear that the comparison was not intended to place them alongside Mercury.

Scott also remembered recent Swiss entries he believed had been underrated and looked forward to sharing a hotel with the Swiss delegation in Malmö.

Nemo introduced The Code for its Radio 2 play, prompting enthusiastic messages from listeners in Britain and overseas.

The Birthday Game: Sam

Sam from Cornwall turned 35 and worked as an engineer at Devonport Dockyard.

Away from work, he spent time with his wife Megan and baby Annie, walked, cycled and drove a very low Lotus sports car.

Sam wanted early-to-mid-2000s dance music, using Daft Punk’s Around the World as his ideal example.

His first spin was the Chemical Brothers’ Block Rockin’ Beats. Sam rejected it.

The second was Jess Glynne’s Hold My Hand. He rejected that too.

His compulsory third song was Snap’s The Power, number one in 1990.

Sam recognised it immediately and was pleased that holding out had paid off.

He accepted the new sustainable birthday card in place of the discontinued balloon.

New music

Scott also introduced Cyril’s remix of Chris Norman and Suzi Quatro’s Stumblin’ In, already a major hit elsewhere in Europe.

Handover

Scott handed over after promising the return of the Music Police the following afternoon.
