10 December 2008: Scott discovered laser-guided scissors and remote Christmas-light switching

A Christmas-light switch-on no longer required attendance

A BBC office wanted a celebrity to turn on its festive lights. The show explored whether the honour could be performed remotely by phone, with Pudsey becoming part of the proposed solution and the whole tradition reduced to someone triggering a switch from somewhere else.

Scott found laser-guided scissors

Christmas wrapping introduced a gadget designed to project a line so the user could cut paper straight. Scott was fascinated by the technology even as everyone questioned whether ordinary scissors had really needed such an upgrade.

The packaging problem undermined the gadget

The team discussed left-handed versions and the irony of products which are difficult to remove from their own packaging. Beccy’s Classifieds added 100 glow sticks to the festive shopping possibilities, while a Spooks-style roleplay allowed the laser scissors to feel momentarily more like spy equipment than stationery.
