11 April 2022: Scott and Chris held Greg James’s royal pencil to ransom

Chris’s Anne-Marie photo had gone wrong

Chris had been at a Watford match and found himself at the same table as Anne-Marie.

He decided to do something he normally avoided and ask for a photograph.

The problem was the person taking it.

Former footballer and commentator Tony Gale ended up with the phone and produced the sort of picture where the celebrity looked fine but Chris was partly cropped out.

Scott added it to Chris’s growing archive of awkward celebrity photos, alongside infamous pictures with Pink and Rihanna.

Holding in farts had become a medical story

The show then picked up a story about a singer and influencer who had reportedly needed medical attention after repeatedly holding in wind around her partner.

That immediately opened a wider conversation about the early stages of relationships, when people try to pretend their bodies do not do perfectly ordinary things.

Scott admitted that he had once spent a very long time avoiding farting in front of a partner.

Listeners responded with their own tactics for escaping rooms, disguising noises and surviving the point in a relationship before everybody finally gives up pretending.

They had Greg James’s royal pencil

The bigger running story involved the royal pencil.

The object dated back to a 2019 visit to Kensington Palace involving Greg James and Geri Halliwell, when Geri had been dared to take a pencil.

It had since become part of Radio 1 folklore.

Now Scott and Chris had acquired it.

They asked their team to send Greg a message saying they had the pencil and would return it only if he met a list of demands.

The team interpreted the brief with alarming enthusiasm.

A disguised voice told Greg they had shaved the pencil down, chewed the end and would only give it back if he complied.

Scott was delighted and slightly horrified by how much the message sounded like an actual ransom demand.

They promised to reveal a new demand each day, turning a stationery item into one of the week’s main storylines.
