28 February 2022: Jordan North started Rowing Home as Scott worried about a lost Pointless disaster

Jordan North was rowing home

After the holiday break, Radio 1 returned with a major challenge already under way.

Jordan North was attempting to row around 100 miles of canals from London towards Burnley for Comic Relief.

The scale of the task was beginning to hit him almost immediately.

Wind, rain and the physical effort of rowing all day were already causing problems.

Scott and Chris were fascinated by the promotional photographs too, which had unexpectedly turned Jordan into a source of considerable thirst online.

The boots, in particular, appeared to be doing a lot of work.

The Who Game returned from the break

The first Who Game back produced another sweep through forgotten culture.

Suggestions included dog tags and bandanas, accidentally downloading karaoke versions of songs, Radio 1 DJs being called “shock jocks”, Nano Bugs, MSN messages saying “BRB, got dinner”, love bites and the old trick of covering one with a scarf.

Scott also remembered a period when he took so much leave that management eventually began formally counting his holiday allowance.

His response at the time had effectively been: *I see what’s happened here, you’ve started counting it.*

Snoochie Shy’s Mastermind appearance triggered quiz-show trauma

Scott and Chris discussed Snoochie Shy appearing on *Celebrity Mastermind* after she had warned followers in advance that her performance might become a laughing stock.

They understood the feeling.

Celebrity quiz shows were often recorded months before broadcast, meaning contestants could spend a long time waiting for an embarrassing performance to reappear.

That led them to reveal their own mystery.

They had filmed an episode of Pointless shortly before Covid.

By their own account, they had been terrible.

Really terrible.

Yet the episode had apparently never aired.

Scott was perfectly happy for it to remain lost and worried that even discussing it on Radio 1 might remind somebody at the BBC that it existed.

Jordan’s body was already hurting

Later in the show Jordan checked in from the canal.

His tailbone and back were hurting far earlier than he had expected, and he was using a hot-water bottle during a short rest before getting back on the water.

Scott suggested football’s mythical magic spray, while the team reminded listeners that the point of the suffering was to raise money for Comic Relief.

Jordan still had days of rowing ahead.

Burnley became the theme of the quiz

Jordan joined the quiz remotely.

The first round asked whether names belonged to Burnley footballers or Burnley estate agents.

Jordan’s local knowledge gave him a clear advantage.

The second round used another famous Burnley connection, Sir Ian McKellen, reading lyrics from pop songs in dramatic style.

He performed lines from tracks including 3 of a Kind’s *Baby Cakes*, Taylor Swift’s *Bad Blood* and One Direction’s *Best Song Ever*.

February therefore ended with one Radio 1 presenter in a boat, another fearing the return of a lost quiz-show humiliation and Ian McKellen dramatically reciting pop lyrics.
