A Mind Blown fact would not go away
Earlier in the week, Mind Blown had claimed cows could have regional differences in the way they mooed.
Chris and Jordan could not leave the idea alone.
Listeners sent recordings of cows from different parts of Britain.
The pair played Staffordshire cows and Scottish-border cows and tried to hear accents which probably existed more clearly in their imaginations.
Radio 1 staff were then asked to perform their own regional mooing.
A Scottish moo.
A Scouse moo.
An ordinary moo.
The exercise proved mainly that adults could be persuaded to make cow noises at work.
Moo Do You Think You Are?
The next step was live science.
Listener Romany was with cows including one called Helga, a home-bred Leicestershire animal.
Could Helga provide an authentic East Midlands moo?
Getting a cow to vocalise on cue was harder than expected.
Romany moved around, offered attention and held the phone near the animals.
Eventually sounds arrived.
Chris and Jordan listened as though conducting forensic phonetics.
Was there a hint of Leicester?
Possibly.
Was it just a cow?
Also possibly.
Helga sounded a little like a car alarm
At one point the mooing became high or repetitive enough for the presenters to compare it with a car alarm.
The serious livestock explanation was more useful.
Cows could make different calls depending on whether they wanted food, were uncomfortable or were separated from where they wanted to be.
That was not the same thing as a cow doing a recognisable Leicester accent.
Radio 1 nevertheless titled the investigation Moo Do You Think You Are?
Bangers went festival
Bangers became a festival special after Radio 1’s morning treasure hunt offered tickets for major events including Big Weekend, Reading and Leeds and Glastonbury.
The station had hidden golden tickets around the UK.
Listeners raced to locations while presenters including Huw Stephens, Chris Ramsey and others supplied clues.
By the afternoon, Chris and Jordan were still enjoying the chaos.
Their own Bangers choices leaned into huge festival tracks.
The Prodigy’s “Firestarter” became one of the contenders.
Chris finally had a superfan
Then came Bea, a listener who was genuinely a major Chris Stark fan.
This delighted Chris because Superfan Steve normally positioned him as the fake obsessive fan of somebody else.
Now the attention was reversed.
Bea wanted Chris rather than Jordan.
Jordan was slightly offended.
Chris enjoyed every second.
Jordan’s week ended
The show also assembled a montage of Jordan’s best moments from covering with Chris.
Dirty Debs.
The wrong grandmother in a funeral tribute.
Nipple flicking.
His resemblance to Yannis from Foals.
Cow accents.
Jordan joked that nobody knew when their final Radio 1 show might be, so this would be a memorable way to go if necessary.
Scott would return on Monday.
Chris had survived the week with Jordan.
Helga had not definitively solved regional mooing.
