16 December 2008: Scott asked whether pets really need Christmas presents

Scott was preparing for Christmas properly

The tree was up and conversation turned to decorations and what should sit at the top. That quickly moved into a more divisive festive question: should pets receive presents?

Listeners were already shopping for animals

Examples included a dog jumper, new collars and even a treasure-chest decoration for a goldfish. Some owners signed cards from their pets as well as to them, extending the family ritual to animals which had no idea a card existed.

The Hairy Bikers became the subject of a word-count feature based on repeated use of “dude”, while the X Factor final remained part of the week’s television conversation. The pet survey still provided the most revealing answers, showing how readily people accepted that Christmas shopping could include someone incapable of opening the present.
