5 February 2024: Spudman, the BBC pips and Claire chooses Blondie

Spudman

Scott discussed the extraordinary popularity of Spudman, whose jacket-potato stall in Tamworth had attracted enormous queues and millions of views online.

Customers were travelling long distances to buy a potato after discovering the business through social media.

Scott decided that a Spudman potato needed to make the journey from Tamworth to the Radio 2 studio.

The challenge immediately raised questions about timing, transport and whether the meal would still be safe and enjoyable by the time it reached London.

The Birthday Game: Claire

Claire lived near Folkestone and turned 49.

At a Killers concert, a couple standing beside her recognised her from serving them in a bar more than 20 years earlier.

Claire hoped for 1990s Britpop from her university years in York, or something extremely cheesy.

Her first spin was KLF’s 3AM Eternal. She briefly caused confusion by shouting “stop” before clarifying that she wanted another spin.

The second was Blondie’s Heart of Glass, number one in 1979.

Claire accepted it.

Her unused third song was Miley Cyrus’ Flowers.

She remained happy with Blondie and received the certificate and balloon.

The BBC pips turn 100

Scott marked 100 years of the Greenwich Time Signal.

The BBC pips were first broadcast on 5 February 1924.

Scott admitted that hearing them on his own programme had been one of the things that excited him most when he joined the BBC.

He and Bobby attempted to recreate the sound themselves before directing listeners to Paddy O’Connell’s documentary.

The Music Police

The force opened another investigation alongside the jacket-potato mission.

The clue was carried forward while listeners submitted possible songs.

Handover

Scott handed over after beginning the journey to bring a Spudman potato to Radio 2.
