15 December 2008: A 50p charge launched Scott’s campaign for squeezy cheese

Fifty pence became a matter of principle

The story began with chips receiving an unexpected addition of squeezy cheese and an extra charge. Scott was less concerned by the amount than by the idea of paying for something which had not been requested.

Listeners did not all know squeezy cheese

The programme then discovered that many people had little idea what the product was. Scott’s surprise turned the condiment into the day’s campaign, with talk of branding, promotion and the strange status of cheese designed to come from a bottle or tube.

Christmas music went to opposite extremes

Basshunter’s festive material was compared with much harder dance interpretations of Christmas tunes. The contrast gave the show another way to take something familiar and push it toward absurdity, much as a normal portion of chips had been transformed by one unrequested squeeze of cheese.
