Aleks_ reacted to OohErr in 20 years of Mills
The Unofficial Mills Twitter account has reminded me that today's the day! 20 years of Scott on Radio 1. I'm so happy he's lasted this long, and hope he doesn't plan to go anywhere anytime soon. The absolute best in the business. A radio legend. Happy 20th Scott!

Someone's done a sterling job on the "Pass the Pasty" voiceover...

He said on the first show that it'll just be one best bit from the show, rather than one with everything in like Scott's

Chris: Are you aware that you've covered five Radio 1 Breakfast Shows since you started?
Scott: That wasn't me. That was another person called Scott Mills cause I've not actually been there that long.
    LOL

Avicci Levels first song selected by a listener how touching. A bit of the old show already. So nervous for Greg it's silly.

God, what a dignified exit. Chris Smith is such a class act.

So Greg's last drivetime song was Mystery Jets - Bubblegum, which helped him with his 1st Gregathlon and is one of his favs. I think Grimmy didn't choose his last breakfast show song by himself, Drake - Nice for what, which they play everyday. Just a small detail here, but it's kind of showing the attitude they both have. Grimmy's treating his show just like job and Greg being ever so engaged with it.

Grimmy's never been my favourite DJ, but he seems like a decent, nice chap and I hope that he'll find his new show exciting and will want to do something brilliant with it. I'll remember his breakfast show as just an okay one.

[EDIT]: didn't notice that OhhErr also wrote about Grimmy's last song. Yes: Hm. sums it up neatly.

The Radio 1 Breakfast Show with Nick Grimshaw ends much like it started - not with a bang, but with a whimper.

The first confirmed feature of Nick Grimshaw's drivetime show is... the entertainment news with Sinead Garvan! Wonder whether they're bringing back the 6:30.

I think Alice is just quite restrained when she's on radio. We know a lot about Greg, Scott, Chris so we treat them like friends. I don't mean deeply personal stuff, but with Alice I don't think I could even tell what her favourite music is. Tuning in to Greg or Scott is like catching up with an old friend. As weird as it sounds - we don't know them, but at the same time, we kind of do.

This is actually so true. I actually end up preferring Alice chatting with a fellow R1 DJ compared to a listener, whereas Dev works better with the listeners. They literally are chalk and cheese, but I like them both!

I do think theres potential in the show. I like the bit at the start of the show where they have a chat about things that have happened on the day (even though Greg already did this). There’s just a feeling they’ve scripted the direction of their links before they go on air, which sometimes doesnt sound right when it comes to double acts, as we’re so used to that natural zoo format approach when there’s more than one on air voice. Scott and Chris can sometimes be the like that but their constant listner interaction makes it sound more subtle. But Dev and Alice still have time to find their feet and these 6 weeks are the perfect opportunity for them to improve!

I've been thinking about this a lot, and I think there's something in it. The thing Alice Levine lacks as a radio presenter is a bond with the audience. I can't put my finger on why - maybe it's the regular absences, maybe it's the sarcastic and slightly cutting sense of humour. But you never quite feel like she's talking to you in the same way you do with Greg, or Scott, or Dev, or Matt, or Grimmy. Weird. But sadly I think she's brought that over to the show with Dev - it now feels a bit more insular with him than when he's by himself. I'm not sure why - I like double acts and zoo formats in general. There's just something that doesn't feel quite right with her. I miss Dev's solo shows.

Alice: Lorde and Green Light, she is clearly someone who follows the green cross code... I hate myself.
Dev: that's okay, I hate you too.
    Metaphorically spat my tea out.

Just wondered whether anyone had any thoughts on Dev and Alice's drivetime cover. It's not bad, but there's something about it that just doesn't feel quite right. I can't quite put my finger on it - it might be that the whole thing seems very pre-planned, in a way that Greg's show never did. Could do with a bit more spontaneity imo, and maybe a couple of regular features.
    Any other thoughts?

The first time it came around, he even had a bit of fun with it and got people to ask questions for which the answer was "I will leave a light on". Although maybe he was taking the piss all along!
Annoyingly I missed the show live so I'm listening back on iPlayer now, I'm nearly done, so some thoughts.
The chat with Chris Smith and Mayor of Where was great, I'm so glad they had a proper last chat and talked about their relationship. I noticed Greg specifically said "we are being separated". So that confirms that then. But it was so lovely to hear them reminiscing.
The Ten Minute Takeover was great as well, I did wonder whether it was fixed though - the first song, You and Me Song by The Wannadies is just a bit emosh, Language by Porter Robinson was his opening bed for about two years and End Credits by Chase and Status used to be the music used for the montage of that day's show he used to play at about 18:55 for the first year or so of drivetime. Coincidence or what.
The highlights montage was great as well. It's a shame for Greg's show that Grace isn't moving with him, although his loss is Scott's gain and hopefully we'll be hearing a lot of her on-air with him and Chris. And obviously the loss  of Chris Smith is a tragedy. I don't want to form an opinion on the new breakfast show before it's even started, and I'm sure whatever happens I'll like it a lot (or at least more than Grimmy's tenure) but it seems as if he's being set up to fail by not keeping his team in place. When Moyles moved from afternoons to breakfast, his core team was kept - him, Dave, Rachel and Aled. Only Georgina Bowman and David Garrido didn't move and they weren't really a part of the show outside of news bulletins. So breaking up the team is undoubtedly a mistake. But we'll see how it goes. Maybe I'm just in denial but I don't think we've seen the last of Greg and Chris on-air together - even if it's just occasional cover.
I remember reading this forum six years ago when the schedule changes were announced. I wasn't a member then, and I don't think any of the regular posters from that time are still around, but back then the forum understandably wasn't happy about Mills being taken off drivetime. Six years on, I think it was for the best - he's lasted way longer on Radio 1 than anyone would've expected back then whilst had he stayed on drive he might not have. And Greg's show was more than a worthy successor. I can't believe I've been listening to Radio 1 that long though - I was in year 8 when Greg started drivetime and I remember coming home to hear his first show, and now I've finished my first year at uni. Wow.

Right George Ezra'a 'Shotgun' has been used about 3 times now and they keep using words like 'sudden death' and 'we're killing it' and 'that killed 5 minutes'.
IT'S GOT TO BE SOMETHING TO DO WITH THAT.

I think it's the first time in a long while that I'm waiting for the songs to be played, because I'm so glued to the radio that I can't even go to the bathroom.

Well, I'm also pro-school. The gong might have just been in the Music classroom, right? The thing is, it doesn't really narrow down the possibilities that much.
There's plenty of teachers that listen to R1 and they'd be up for it too.
