Gary Davies opened Monday’s Drivetime by confirming that Angela Scanlon will become the programme’s new regular host, with Ben Earl taking over the Radio 2 Country Show. Davies said Scanlon was “going to be great” and recalled working alongside her for a week earlier in the year.
Listeners then shared their own “big news” by voice note, covering everything from a granddaughter’s third birthday to a completed 200-mile Coast to Coast walk and a family securing three job offers.
The main interview feature saw Davies catch up by phone with Owain Wyn Evans, six weeks out from his BBC Children in Need Four Nations Cycle Challenge, a near-400-mile ride across Scotland, Northern Ireland, England and Wales finishing in Cardiff. Evans was joined on air by his partner Kirsten, to whom he apologised for lying about keeping the challenge secret: “I straight out lied to you.” The pair also discussed naming his bike, with Evans favouring “Margaret” while listeners suggested alternatives including Bessie and Bronwyn.
The Radio 2 Pub Quiz returned at the Chilli Arms with a musical theatre round. Guest player Amber, a wedding cake maker from Huntingdon competing as “The Rolling Scones,” scored a perfect five out of five, matching regular quizzer Kirsten O’Brain. Davies confirmed Mark Goodier would host the quiz on Wednesday and Thursday while he covers the Breakfast Show.
Davies also brought his new jukebox segment over from Breakfast, inviting listeners to nominate school disco songs; choices played included “Oops Upside Your Head,” “Superman” and Ottawan’s “D.I.S.C.O.” Other features included a look back at TV anniversaries for Brum and Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and a nod to Sam Smith’s recent Jo Whiley session, ahead of her interview with Sharon Horgan later that evening.
