Listeners sent in what was on their minds, from labelling cheese at work to wedding guest lists and a new game release, before the studio led a “national baaa” together at 4pm.
The pair continued their Who’s in the Box guessing game, playing a second clue combining X Factor music with running water sounds. Listener guesses ranged from Cher Lloyd and Jedward to Susan Boyle, before the hosts settled on Dermot O’Leary as their answer, to be confirmed later in the week.
Katie and Emil also ran through Dakota Johnson’s unpopular opinions segment recorded on Breakfast with Greg James, and gave a run-through of Sunday’s MTV VMAs, covering Madonna’s opening collaboration with Charlie XCX and Sabrina Carpenter, a Nirvana tribute, and Taylor Swift becoming the most-awarded VMA artist in history, dedicating her prize to “the ultimate showgirl” Dolly Parton.
Mylo and Rosie, hosts of Radio 1’s new Early Breakfast show, joined for Red Flag Green Flag, admitting to re-wearing gym kit and shaving armpits respectively; listeners voted the pair a collective green flag.
The 5.30 anthem, themed around VMA-style collaborations, was chosen by listener vote as Jay-Z and Linkin Park’s “Numb/Encore”. The show closed by pointing listeners towards Jack Saunders’ evening show, which was hosting a listening party for the new tracks on Taylor Swift’s “Life of a Showgirl” encore edition.
