Trevor Nelson devoted much of Monday’s show to a special Trevor Trove marking 50 years since the release of Stevie Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life, which he called his personal favourite album of all time. He played “Love’s in Need of Love Today” and told listeners that Spoony would feature more tracks from the record later that evening on Radio 2.
The Five Seconds to Name quiz returned with the cryptic clue “compassionate cascade,” which listeners eventually worked out referred to TLC and their song “Waterfalls.” Several listeners guessed wrongly, including Gabrielle, Girls Aloud and Destiny’s Child, before James in Cornwall was confirmed as the first correct texter and Vicky Nelson was named as first to solve it from the clue alone. Nelson revealed Clara would present Wednesday’s edition with a new clue about “a guy’s love of custard tarts.”
A highlight of the show was a call with Amanda from Aberdeen, a former finalist in Nelson’s original “Five Seconds to Name” game from his 1Xtra days a decade ago. Amanda, now with a one-year-old daughter, correctly named TLC and shared family news live on air.
Listeners also sent in five-word reviews of their weekends, covering everything from gigs and holidays to a “pre-Christmas clear out.” Nelson’s Old School Run featured Dan Hartman, Odyssey and Gerald Levert.
New music included “Proxy” by St Paul and the Broken Bones. Nelson closed the show joking about a fake “hairdresser” story he had posted online involving Angela Scanlon, newly announced as the incoming Drivetime host alongside Sara Cox.
