1 June 2022: Josh introduced himself as Selena Gomez as Britain went full Jubilee

Britain was ramping up the Jubilee

The long Platinum Jubilee weekend was approaching and Scott could see the country visibly switching into celebration mode.

There was bunting everywhere, Union Jack plastic hats had appeared and two women opposite him on the train were already drinking pre-mixed gin and tonics despite it being a Wednesday morning.

BBC Breakfast had also reached the stage of the coverage where a Queen impersonator, a town crier and roughly 20 fake corgis could be deployed on television at once.

Scott decided he should contribute by increasing his own levels of Britishness, although his preferred route involved a barbecue rather than waving a flag.

Josh had a Big Weekend moment that would not leave him alone

The show asked for the embarrassing memories which still returned at night just as people were trying to sleep.

Producer Josh had a very recent example from Radio 1’s Big Weekend.

He had been working backstage, responsible for finding people and making sure they reached the correct place for live broadcasts. At one point he was trying to locate somebody connected with Selena Gomez.

When a woman standing nearby asked Josh his name, his stressed brain supplied the one name he had been repeating to himself all evening.

He answered: “Selena Gomez.”

The mistake was bad enough on its own.

Josh then tried to rescue himself with a joke about looking a little young to be Selena and his hairline receding more than hers.

Scott and Chris agreed that the attempted recovery had made the entire encounter considerably worse.

Listeners shared the moments they still replayed

The confession opened the door to more stories.

Aaron remembered cycling home and seeing an ex-girlfriend with her new boyfriend in a car. Distracted by the sight of them, he clipped the kerb and fell off the bike while both of them were watching.

Sarah had an even more elaborate story involving Little Mix.

She and her wife Chloe had been fans for years and had originally met through their shared love of the group. After a 2019 tour date in Birmingham they ended up in the same club as Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Jade Thirlwall.

Chloe had been drinking, lost her balance during the conversation and grabbed Leigh-Anne as she fell. Her drink also went over Leigh-Anne’s face and hair.

Sarah said the memory still haunted her badly enough that even at Little Mix’s farewell tour she struggled with the idea of looking directly at the stage.

Even corgis became a national talking point

The Jubilee conversation returned to the Queen’s most famous dogs.

Scott and Chris realised that, despite corgis being instantly recognisable, they struggled to name anybody other than the Queen who actually owned one.

By the end of the programme, Britain’s Jubilee preparations, Josh accidentally becoming Selena Gomez and a Little Mix nightclub disaster had all become part of the same Wednesday afternoon.
