A concert clip of Lorde telling her audience to be quiet had become a viral trend.
Scott respected the directness of it.
Sometimes, he decided, people simply needed to be shushed.
Listeners began nominating targets.
Scott shushed builders drilling outside, a chatty apprentice, a fiancĂ© talking endlessly about cars and even one listener’s anxiety about leaving a puppy with family while going on holiday.
The joke worked because the same theatrical “shhh” could be aimed at something genuinely irritating or something living entirely inside your own head.
Sam Ryder went to Stupid Street
Scott’s Eurovision campaign then returned to Stupid Street.
He wanted to know whether ordinary people recognised the UK’s entry, Sam Ryder.
Sam was already one of Britain’s biggest TikTok music creators and had celebrity supporters, but that did not help much here.
Shown a photograph of him, one person guessed Jared Leto.
Several compared him with Jesus because of the long hair.
Another thought he might work for a creative agency, while somebody else suggested yoga teacher.
Scott found it both hilarious and slightly alarming.
If Britain wanted Eurovision votes, he still had work to do before even people near Radio 1 could identify the singer.
The archive returned to Dicky’s Dribble
The day’s Golden Moment went back to the first meeting with Dicky from Dicky’s Dribble, one of those old show characters whose name alone immediately transported long-term listeners back into the archive.
The quiz also used old X Factor auditions, including a young Jade Thirlwall, while Scott discovered that Chris Ramsey had appeared on the programme before becoming famous.
With Remi Burgz back for Bangers, April’s final supplied transcript ended in exactly the mix the show specialised in: current internet nonsense, Eurovision campaigning and very deep Radio 1 archive references all sharing the same afternoon.
