29 March 2022: Radio 1 tried to prove it really had a million reasons to listen

Smart watches were perhaps too clever

A viral post raised an uncomfortable question about activity trackers.

A couple had apparently finished the same vigorous “workout” at the same time, prompting notifications which made the activity rather obvious to family members sharing the fitness system.

Scott and Chris wanted to know how sensitive smart watches really were.

Listeners replied with devices which had mistaken peeling potatoes for cycling and other ordinary movements for organised exercise.

The technology could count movement.

Understanding context was another matter.

Ben and Katie played Brother or Lover

Ben was a long-distance lorry driver experiencing his first ever Zoom call.

Katie worked as a PA at an estate agent and was considerably more familiar with the technology.

The team questioned them about classes, holidays, routines and the kind of things couples normally do together.

The reveal was that Ben and Katie were lovers.

They had successfully created enough uncertainty to keep the game alive despite sounding increasingly comfortable together.

Were there really a million reasons to listen?

Radio 1 was running a trailer declaring that there were one million reasons to listen.

Scott and Chris accepted the basic point.

Radio 1 did have lots of good reasons.

A million, however, sounded ambitious.

So Vick Hope was effectively locked into the task of listing them.

She began with new music, Live Lounge, Big Weekend, Newsbeat, podcasts, Superfan Steve and an ever-growing catalogue of Radio 1 features.

The list quickly demonstrated the problem.

Getting to a few dozen was easy.

Getting to one million was going to take considerably longer than one afternoon.

The pair also complained about the clocks changing, with Scott arguing that losing an hour had left him tired for days and once again questioning why society kept moving time around at all.
