Rylan returns
Rylan joined Scott for another informal visit, moving between radio, television and the small stories that had accumulated since they last spoke.
Their long friendship meant the conversation unfolded through interruptions and callbacks rather than a conventional interview.
Rylan stayed involved across links and reacted to listener messages and the day’s quiz.
Johnny Ball judges Game Changers
Johnny Ball joined at 8.30 to assess listeners’ Game Changers.
Scott introduced him as a childhood icon whose television programmes had made maths and science feel playful rather than intimidating.
Johnny approached each listener tip by asking why it worked, whether the explanation made sense and if the idea actually solved the original problem.
His curiosity repeatedly turned small household suggestions into miniature demonstrations of logic and cause and effect.
The feature also allowed Scott to discuss Johnny’s broadcasting career and the influence of programmes that trusted children with real ideas.
By the end of the round, the approved Game Changers had survived a stricter test than usual because Johnny wanted evidence rather than enthusiasm.
The Birthday Game: Emily
Emily from Taunton turned 36. Her previous birthday had involved giving birth to a very large and overdue third baby, making this year’s celebration considerably quieter and less painful.
She faced three former number-one songs and judged each against whether it suited a birthday that no longer had childbirth as its main event.
8 July 2025: Vernon Kay
The handover returned to Johnny Ball’s verdicts and Rylan’s ability to turn a brief pop-in into a substantial part of the programme.
