Nothing But Thieves gave Radio 1 listeners goosebumps with a surprise cover choice in Wednesday's Live Lounge, turning Beyoncé's Crazy in Love into a dark, brooding rock ballad. Charlie Hedges was blown away, telling the band "that for me is my favourite Live Lounge of all time" as texts flooded in comparing it to classic covers by Arctic Monkeys and Amy Winehouse. The band admitted it was a last-minute gamble, revealing they only nailed the rehearsal the day before after flying back from a South Korea tour.
The Essex rockers also opened up about the making of their new fifth album, Stray Dogs, explaining they deliberately returned to the studio where they recorded their very first record to "bookend" this chapter of their career. They teased that real crowd noise from one of their shows is woven into the album, daring fans to try and work out which gig it came from, while staying tight-lipped themselves: "I'm staying strong for now."
There was also a fun tangent about boxing, with the band revealing they recently went for Chinese food with boxer Big John, who they said simply told them "absolutely, come down" when invited. They also declared themselves firmly "Team AJ" ahead of any future Anthony Joshua fight talk.
Earlier in the show, Charlie and Jerry ran their regular Wednesday Wins feature, hearing from listeners including Theo from Norwich, who beat his boss to work, and Charlie from Cornwall, who felt "like a brand new woman" after finally getting a haircut. The One Second Club also continued, with physio listener Jess correctly guessing Ariana Grande's Breathin on the third attempt.
