23 May 2022: Joe chose the football lads over his anniversary trip to Big Weekend

A football tweet caused trouble before the show

Chris had spent Sunday enjoying a day of sport and posted a relaxed photograph while watching Formula One and football.

As often happens online, people found details in the picture he had not thought about before posting it.

The conversation became another reminder that even the most ordinary social-media upload could suddenly turn into a forensic investigation by strangers.

Amy’s boyfriend had a serious Big Weekend dilemma

Listener Amy had won tickets to Radio 1’s Big Weekend.

There was one complication.

The event fell around her first anniversary with boyfriend Joe, which should have made the decision easy.

Except Joe had already organised his football team’s presentation night.

That meant curry with the lads, the end-of-season awards and then watching the Champions League final together.

Scott and Chris put both sides on air.

Amy made the obvious romantic case for spending their anniversary at one of the biggest music events of the year.

Joe’s friend represented the football team.

Then Joe had to decide.

He chose the lads.

Amy was not exactly delighted.

The programme immediately filled with listeners offering to take Joe’s unused Big Weekend place instead.

Could Radio 1 actually have created couples?

The story led Chris to wonder how many people had met partners at Big Weekend over the years.

Thousands of listeners had attended the festival, plenty had camped, travelled and queued together, and the Radio 1 staff themselves had certainly seen relationships begin around work events.

Scott invited anybody whose relationship could genuinely be traced back to Big Weekend to get in touch.

The Who Game returned to forgotten culture

The nostalgia game once again asked everyone to name things which used to be everywhere and were now barely mentioned.

Suggestions included Club Penguin, old phrases, forgotten memes and bits of internet culture that had once seemed permanent.

The pleasure of the feature came from hearing a word or reference and instantly remembering an entire period of life around it.

Live radio then fell apart for a while

The afternoon developed a run of technical problems.

A Bangers call did not behave as expected.

Then a new Tate McRae track failed to play, leaving the show joking about broadcasting several minutes of silence instead.

Producer Amy was frustrated because she had checked everything beforehand.

Scott preferred to see it as the unavoidable danger of doing the show live.

Not every half hour could be the finest half hour of your career.
