Big Weekend memories were already coming back
With Radio 1’s Big Weekend approaching, Scott and Chris began remembering the chaos of previous festivals.
There had been an improvised marathon DJ set when another artist could not perform, ridiculous backstage moments and the time Joel Corry was introduced through a shower of fake money fired from money guns.
Chris also remembered the less glamorous parts, including somehow finding his own pants in a sink.
Big Weekend rarely went entirely to plan.
That was part of why they loved it.
Do not dump somebody before their exams
A TikTok from a university student named Nicola caught their attention.
She explained that she had been in a relationship since she was 17 and had now been dumped shortly before major university exams.
Her response was to run into the sea while her friend filmed the moment.
Scott and Chris decided the timing was unacceptable.
Unless there were genuinely exceptional circumstances, they wanted a basic rule: no break-ups immediately before exams.
Listeners responded with stories of partners ending relationships on the morning of tests or during the opening days of university.
That brought back one of the show’s recurring arguments.
Going to university while trying to preserve a school relationship could work, but the odds were often not kind.
Spaceman was still fighting for number one
The Eurovision result had passed, but Sam Ryder was now involved in another contest.
“Spaceman” was challenging for the top of the UK chart.
Scott, as host of the Official Chart, had to be careful not to openly campaign for one record.
Chris had no such difficulty.
The show danced around the rules, making clear how delighted everybody would be if Sam’s extraordinary Eurovision week ended with a number one single.
Taylor Swift joined the honorary doctorate club
Then came news that Taylor Swift had received an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree from New York University.
Scott and Chris congratulated her before immediately acknowledging the obvious irritation for students who had spent years and large amounts of money earning their qualifications.
Scott already knew the feeling from the celebrity side because honorary degrees had been handed to plenty of broadcasters and musicians over the years.
Listeners with real doctorates joked about mountains of debt while celebrities got gowns, titles and ceremonies for free.
The show concluded that an honorary doctor was still not the kind of doctor anybody wanted turning up during a medical emergency.
