30 November 2021: Glass Animals gave the backing singers 10 out of 10 and Dave Bayley only five

Chris’s temperature scanner briefly made him medically impossible

Radio 1 still had automatic temperature checks at the entrance.

Chris was used to stepping in front of the machine and moving his face around until it recognised him.

That morning, the system produced an extraordinary result.

55 degrees.

Security understandably stopped him.

Chris pointed out that if his body temperature genuinely were 55°C, the problem would be rather more serious than whether he should enter Broadcasting House.

A second device eventually confirmed the obvious.

Chris was not cooking from the inside.

Listeners reported similar false readings, often caused by hot drinks or scanners placed near heat sources.

Underwhelming tourist attractions entered the show

Chris had recently visited the Isle of Man and finally seen the famous Fairy Bridge.

Locals traditionally greet the fairies while passing.

Scott had spoken about it enough that Chris expected something fairly substantial.

The reality:

a small bridge beside the road.

Chris understood the folklore.

He simply found the physical structure underwhelming compared with the hype.

That led to listeners nominating other famous attractions which look much larger in photographs than in real life.

Stonehenge immediately entered the discussion.

Scott joked that Britain sends tourists to an airport which claims to be London, then makes them travel for hours to look at some rocks.

Dave Bayley reviewed Glass Animals’ Live Lounge

Dave Bayley joined after Glass Animals performed in the Live Lounge.

Chris admitted something which had changed dramatically.

He had liked the band for a while.

Recently, something had clicked and he had become almost an unofficial Glass Animals ambassador.

Dave was preparing to listen back to the band’s cover of a Lorde song.

As usual, Scott wanted the artist’s immediate reaction before there was time to rewrite the memory.

Dave loved the backing singers more than himself

The first thing Dave noticed was the backing vocals.

He had not been able to hear them properly while performing.

On the playback, he was delighted.

He praised the singers repeatedly.

Their sound.

Their energy.

The dancing.

He wanted them on everything the band did.

His score:

10 or 11 out of 10.

Then Scott asked Dave to assess his own performance.

That was much harder.

Dave said he was extremely critical of himself and never gave himself above five.

Scott and Chris protested.

At least an eight.

Dave was not convinced.

The podcast title captured the imbalance perfectly:

BVs 10 — Dave Bayley 5.

The review almost became a drinking game

Scott joked that podcast listeners could drink every time Dave complimented the backing singers.

There would have been a lot of drinking.

Dave kept returning to them throughout the playback.

The segment was a particularly clear example of why the show loved immediate Live Lounge reviews.

Listeners hear a complete performance.

Artists hear every tiny detail — and sometimes become obsessed with something happening behind them.

Teen Hero Kia received her own surprise

The programme also celebrated Kia, 18, a young carer whose mum was recovering from a brainstem bleed and needed extensive support.

Kia returned home from college at lunchtime to help care for her.

Radio 1 surprised her with Charlie Hedges at the door and messages from stars of *Holby City*.

Scott and Chris were genuinely moved by the contrast with the normal silliness of the show.

One moment could be a faulty 55°C temperature scanner.

The next could recognise an 18-year-old doing extraordinary work for her family.
