1 July 2021: Will said goodbye as Joe discovered he may have been conceived to Walking in the Air

Chugs immediately looked like a Love Island plant

Scott had watched only the end of *Love Island* but had already become fascinated by new arrival Chugs.

The introduction clip seemed almost too perfectly ridiculous.

Chugs was 23.

He ran a bucket-hat business in Surrey.

He announced that the person he cared most about was himself.

And he had arrived in the villa with no interest in making friends.

Scott and Chris began wondering whether he was even real.

The whole persona reminded them of the old *Celebrity Big Brother* twist where a non-celebrity had to convince the housemates she belonged there.

Chugs, they decided, had the energy of somebody inserted specifically to stir everything up.

Joe volunteered for Where Do You Think They Were?

The much more dangerous feature belonged to listener Joe, 24, from Shrewsbury.

Joe was a teacher and musician.

The show even played part of one of his own songs before reminding him of the price he would pay for that national-radio exposure.

His father Giles was about to explain exactly how Joe had been conceived.

Joe had not heard the story before.

That is the entire point of Where Do You Think They Were?

Giles took the story back to summer 1996

Giles remembered the atmosphere around Euro ’96.

England were scoring.

He and his wife had been married for several years.

They had decided it might be time to start a family.

There was expensive champagne.

There was a home-cooked meal.

And because Joe’s mum was a professional classical singer, there was plenty of choral music in the house.

The most memorable song in Giles’s recollection was Walking in the Air.

Joe was horrified.

The song was already played surprisingly often by his dad.

It now had a completely different meaning.

The bedroom was not actually the location

Giles described the pair heading upstairs with moonlight coming through the house.

Scott assumed the story was about to become a conventional bedroom conception.

It did not.

Giles remembered the bathroom floor.

Worse for Joe, the bathroom was apparently carpeted.

The story then reached the level of detail the feature was designed to inflict.

Clothes.

Moonlight.

Music.

The sort of thing a son never needs to hear from his father.

Joe repeatedly asked for the memory to leave his head.

Scott and Chris considered that proof the feature had worked.

Will’s final day became unexpectedly emotional

The other major story was producer Will leaving the team after roughly two-and-a-half to three years.

The show looked back at the amount he had been involved in.

Lolathon.

Bamboleo at the Royal Albert Hall.

Trips including Muff.

Superfan Steve.

Where Do You Think They Were?

The programme’s perfume.

The death and life of Innuendo Bingo.

And Scott seeing a naked woman for the first time.

Will had started his BBC career thinking he might remain a postman.

Instead he had become one of the most recognisable behind-the-scenes voices on the programme.

His leaving presents were completely on-brand

Will gave Chris an apron reading “Chris Stark, King of the Barbecue” with Chris’s face and a crown.

Scott received exactly the kind of decorative household sign he loved.

It had the “Live Laugh Love” energy Scott filled his house with.

The programme also played a round of Will or No Will, using facts and stories from his time on the show.

By the end, Scott and Chris were joking because that was easier than making the goodbye too sentimental.

Will thanked them both for allowing him to be part of something he never imagined he would get to do.
