Lewis Capaldi’s Bingo clips were still being replayed
The previous day’s Innuendo Bingo was still providing material. Listeners had already picked favourite lines, including the grandmother’s china cabinet, and the show happily revisited the moments that had broken Lewis and Chris.
The online side of the programme had also managed to tag the wrong people with familiar Radio 1 names, leading Scott and Chris into a discussion about strangers who happened to share names with presenters and then unexpectedly received the station’s social media attention.
Johannes returned with a far more glamorous family story
Where Do You Think They Were brought back Johannes, one of the show’s freshers from earlier in the autumn. His mum Jane had been working on a superyacht in Antigua, while his father worked as a deckhand on a racing yacht.
They met through the yacht social scene and eventually ended up together on the superyacht. Jane described the parties, rum punch and the moment they returned to her cabin, placing Johannes’s conception in a setting considerably more glamorous than most of the bedrooms, tents and family homes the feature had visited.
Jay Z entered the timeline immediately afterwards
The story then took an extraordinary turn. Soon after the encounter, Jay Z came aboard to film material for Big Pimpin’. Jane remembered women arriving in bikinis and staff serving champagne during the shoot.
At that point she did not yet know she was pregnant. Jay Z and his group invited her out after filming, but she began to feel unwell while getting ready. The programme was careful to make the family timeline clear: Johannes’s father was the deckhand Jane had already described, not the famous rapper who happened to appear on the yacht afterwards.
It was the first conception story the team could remember where a major music video effectively arrived as the epilogue.
The Tune of the Week suddenly had a Christmas advert problem
Scott also worried that the show’s backing of a Bastille and Alessia Cara track had been complicated by a major department store Christmas campaign. The programme had chosen the song as Tune of the Week expecting to help build momentum, only for the wider release story to change around it.
The team joked about whether their supposedly powerful endorsement had been overtaken by events. Even Bangers was having a slightly chaotic day, but the Caribbean conception story had already given the show more than enough material.
