5 July 2021: England fans destroyed their voices as Hannah’s segway injury earned premium-listener status

Will had shouted his voice away

England’s weekend football result had left plenty of listeners recovering on Monday.

Listener Will sounded particularly bad.

His normal voice had been replaced by a strained croak after hours of shouting.

Scott immediately decided this should become a Live Lounge of sorts.

If football fans had wrecked their voices, Radio 1 should make them sing difficult pop songs.

Will tried Olivia Rodrigo.

The notes were nowhere near available.

Scott kept asking him to go higher.

Will kept discovering there was nowhere higher to go.

The show promised to check back on his voice after England’s next match.

Channel 5 appeared to be speeding up Friends

A listener had noticed something strange while watching Friends on Channel 5.

The theme and dialogue sounded slightly quicker.

Rather than trust instinct, she compared the television version with Netflix on another device.

The Channel 5 version genuinely appeared faster.

Scott and Chris became obsessed with the idea.

If speeding up television meant broadcasters could fit more into a schedule, perhaps everything should be accelerated.

Why stop with *Friends*?

Old reality-TV moments could be quicker.

Curtis from *Love Island* could make everyone coffee faster.

Scott could even perform the radio show at 1.5×.

The conversation linked neatly with WhatsApp’s newer faster voice-note playback.

Modern life apparently wanted everything done sooner.

Hannah applied for the VIP section

The premium-listener feature was still looking for people’s best stories.

Listener Hannah, 24, had one from her Young Farmers days in 2017.

The group went on an off-road segway activity.

Someone ahead of Hannah fell.

She swerved to avoid them.

Then she came off the segway herself.

Unfortunately she did not simply hit the ground.

She landed directly on the upright pole.

And she landed with the most delicate possible part of her body.

The injury required surgery

Hannah initially did what people often do when hurt in public.

She stood up.

Said she was fine.

Tried to behave as if nothing had happened.

By the following day, however, the swelling was so severe she sought medical help.

It was not simply bruising.

There was internal bleeding.

The injury was serious enough to require an operation.

Scott and Chris tried to ask questions without making the whole thing even more embarrassing.

Hannah admitted the injury had left a lasting scar.

Premium-listener status was awarded immediately.

The Who Game brought back Orange Wednesdays and Flappy Bird

The Who Game returned with one of its strongest collections of recent nostalgia.

Orange Wednesdays.

Flappy Bird.

Selfie sticks.

Printing directions before a journey.

Topping up a pay-as-you-go mobile.

David Beckham’s mohawk.

Being told you’d get square eyes from sitting too close to the television.

Even asking somebody for a spare Orange Wednesday ticket suddenly sounded like an artefact from another era.

The programme had begun with a listener whose voice had disappeared over one weekend.

It ended proving whole pieces of everyday life can disappear just as quickly.
