5 February 2020: Factory smells launched a Scott-versus-Chris beauty contest

Some towns smelled brilliant

The workplace-alarm discussion had led Scott and Chris towards factories.

Now they became interested in places where the factory could be smelled across an entire area.

One listener described a Kettle Chips factory near Norwich.

Standing nearby could make it seem as though somebody was cooking excellent chips even at ten in the morning.

Another area near a biscuit factory regularly smelled sweet.

People arriving by train could identify the industry before seeing the building.

Scott liked the idea of towns having their own unofficial scent.

Some towns definitely did not

The opposite example came from North Wales.

A local pet-food factory could leave the surrounding area smelling strongly of dog food.

That was considerably less romantic.

Scott and Chris realised the feature needed two categories.

Places where industrial production made residents hungry.

And places where everybody learned to keep the windows shut.

Chris accused Scott of choosing flattering photographs

Then an Instagram picture with the Jonas Brothers started a much more personal argument.

Scott was pleased with how he looked.

Chris accused him of always approving photographs where Scott looked good even if Chris looked less flattering.

Scott wondered whether the real explanation was simpler.

Perhaps he was just better looking than Chris.

Chris could not believe he had said it.

The show became a national beauty referendum neither presenter had needed.

Listeners supplied opinions, insults and theories about clothing.

One message suggested Chris looked like somebody who wore bootcut jeans with a certain heavily branded jacket.

Scott enjoyed that far too much.

Even Chris’s wife complicated the result

Chris admitted his wife might technically consider Scott better-looking on conventional criteria while still obviously preferring Chris.

That created the most useful conclusion.

Attraction did not work like a league table.

The pair could stop comparing.

They did not.

Scott wanted a dog

The strong pet-food smell moved the conversation back to Scott’s potential dog.

He thought he had finally reached a point where he could responsibly own one.

Chris was not completely convinced.

Listeners began suggesting breeds.

An Afghan hound appealed because of its spectacular hair.

Another suggestion, the Brussels Griffon, made the show think the dog might even resemble Scott slightly.

Scott continued saying he would make time for walks.

Chris continued imagining somebody else eventually doing them.

The dog had not yet been purchased.

Radio 1 was already choosing its face.
