17 May 2016: The Hairy Bikers deliver an exceptionally wet Innuendo Bingo

Old School and new friendships

The Hairy Bikers joined the show to discuss Old School, their BBC Two series connecting teenagers with older people. Dave Myers and Si King said loneliness affected both age groups and that a school provided a safe, neutral place for them to meet.

The relationships were based on exchanging skills rather than one side simply helping the other. Some flourished and some encountered problems, but the Bikers believed both generations gained confidence, companionship and a sense of purpose. They linked the project with Radio 1’s One Million Hours volunteering campaign.

They then faced Chris in Innuendo Bingo. The show had briefly considered finding protective covers for their beards, but nothing reduced the force of the game. Dave and Si produced one of the wettest exchanges of the year through clips from cookery and travel programmes, before leaving to promote the next episode of Old School.

The chef who answered back

Scott and Chris found a Yorkshire restaurant owner using the name Pedro who refused to give standard apologetic responses to bad online reviews. He challenged complaints about loud music, sour cream, crispy burritos and slow replacement meals, telling one customer to try KFC and another to produce a receipt if a claimed discount was genuine.

Pedro argued that anonymous complaints could damage a small business and that he had a right to defend his staff and food. Other owners contacted the show in support, while Scott proposed making him a regular “sassy chef”. Pedro reported that publicity around his replies had made the restaurant busier than ever.

Packing for Exeter

Dev arrived for Real or No Real and inspected the bags Scott and Chris had packed for two nights at Radio 1’s Academy in Exeter. Chris had forgotten enough underwear, but Dev had brought a three-pack and offered him a spare pair.

The game included an elderly couple visiting a nightclub until 5am and the possibility of pizza delivery to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro. Scott and Dev finished level on ten points before the show prepared to travel west.
