4 February 2020: Hayley Williams gave her own Live Lounge a nine out of ten

Scott and Chris discovered the power breakfast

The presenters had begun occasionally meeting for what Scott called a power breakfast.

Most show ideas normally appeared late at night in a pub.

The breakfast version was supposed to provide organisation.

Lists.

Planning.

Actual work.

Scott enjoyed leaving the meeting feeling as though he had already completed something useful before the programme began.

Chris pointed out that most normal colleagues would simply call this a meeting.

Scott preferred the branding.

Tiptree ran on jam time

The discussion about workplace lunch alarms produced an extraordinary call from Liz at the Tiptree jam factory in Essex.

The factory had a steam-powered hooter which had apparently been part of local life for generations.

It signalled several moments across the day.

Work beginning.

Lunch starting.

Lunch finishing.

The end of the day.

On Fridays, it also marked the earlier finish.

A long-serving employee had known the hooter throughout decades at the factory.

Liz said local people effectively set their routines around it.

Scott immediately called the system Greenwich Jam Time.

The hooter sounded like an emergency

Radio 1 heard the noise.

It was enormous.

Scott thought it sounded less like lunch and more like war breaking out.

Liz explained that sounding it at the wrong time for a special occasion could actually confuse people around the village.

That made the hooter much more than an internal factory bell.

It was part of Tiptree’s soundscape.

Hayley Williams returned

Then Hayley Williams joined following the launch of her solo material including “Simmer”.

Scott and Chris had known her primarily through Paramore.

Hayley talked about returning to the Live Lounge in a new musical phase and about the unusual challenge of choosing a cover.

The list could make her feel out of touch because she did not necessarily know every current song.

This time the choice was Dua Lipa’s “Don’t Start Now.”

She heard every tiny mistake

Scott replayed the performance and asked Hayley to critique it.

She immediately noticed a small shaky moment and a line she thought she could have delivered better.

Scott and Chris had not heard a problem.

Hayley explained that performers listened to themselves differently.

The important context was that the musicians around her were effectively performing together in this form for the first time.

Asked to score the session from one to ten, Hayley chose:

nine.

She also admitted she had been so nervous beforehand she thought she might barf into the microphone.

Scott loved hearing the word “barf” almost as much as the score.

Bangers found a man called Tave

The day’s Bangers caller had an unusual enough name for Scott to change the rules.

Tave received three choices rather than the normal two, allowing Scott to turn the name into another musical joke.

The show declared him an unofficial man of the match.

There was no man-of-the-match award on any other day.

Tave had simply earned one by being a good caller.
