25 November 2019: Chris became Liz’s perfect fake boyfriend while Scott played the sweet old lady

Chris had attacked the weekend after football disappointment

Chris arrived with a rough voice after a football social in Maidenhead. His account involved a large group, Pizza Hut, Wetherspoons and Smokey Joe’s, turning a disappointing sporting result into a determined night out.

Scott was less interested in the football than in the image of Chris fully committing to a social with a group he had only recently begun playing alongside.

Lewis Capaldi became the new Tune of the Week

The programme unveiled a new Tune of the Week from Lewis Capaldi and treated the backing as though it were a major honour being bestowed personally by Scott. The song prompted a more serious conversation about loss and the aftermath of somebody taking their own life.

Later, the team checked in with regular listener Nicole from South Wales. Previous appearances had followed her first trip on a plane and her overwhelming experience at Reading Festival. This time they arranged something even bigger for the following day: Nicole would finally speak to one of her favourites, Gemma Collins.

An airline pilot answered the questions passengers never ask

Ask Me Anything used a voice changer for Sam, an airline pilot. He explained that pilots were not formally trained to develop the calm captain’s announcement voice; it simply tended to emerge with the job.

Sam admitted that he sometimes gave passengers details such as altitude, temperature and speed because he found them interesting, even if Scott thought some captains sounded as though they were narrating their own impressive work. He also explained why aircraft could sometimes make up time after a delayed departure by flying faster within operating constraints.

His stories included receiving phone numbers in meal trays and once opening an aircraft toilet after getting no response, only to find a passenger inside without clothes. The disguise allowed him to be more candid than the average captain’s announcement.

The fake boyfriend service went for maximum perfection

Listener Liz was tired of her brother Matt making jokes about her being the only single member of the family. The show’s solution was to call him with Chris pretending to be Liz’s new boyfriend.

Liz provided the brief. Matt liked climbing, Liverpool and dogs, so Chris built a character who matched everything. The aim was not merely to sound plausible but to sound so perfect that Matt would immediately regret ever mocking his sister.

Scott’s sweet old lady completed the performance

Midway through the call, Scott entered as a sweet old lady in distress because her dog had become stuck in a tree. Chris paused his conversation with Matt, rescued the imaginary animal and returned sounding even more heroic.

The old lady praised him as the kind of man she would want a daughter to marry. By the time Chris returned to the call, the fake boyfriend had accumulated Liverpool loyalty, climbing ability, kindness to dogs and spontaneous public service. Subtlety had never been part of the plan.
