20 November 2019: Sam Fender received Scott’s vocal coaching as José Mourinho arrived at Tottenham

Football news needed translating for Scott

The major sports story was Tottenham Hotspur sacking Mauricio Pochettino and appointing José Mourinho. Chris assumed Scott would at least have absorbed the basics of such a large football story. Scott’s face immediately showed that he had not.

Chris explained why Spurs supporters might be unhappy and why Pochettino still had strong support despite the club’s form. The best part for Scott was not the tactical context but a fan interviewed on television who reacted to Mourinho’s arrival with a burst of pure enthusiasm and the word “energy”.

That clip became Scott’s preferred way of understanding the news. Whenever the football explanation became complicated, the programme could simply return to the excited fan.

Harriet tried to sell Chris on the coffee plan

The coffee enema proposal survived overnight. Listener Harriet joined to reassure Chris that the treatment was not simply somebody pouring a normal cup of coffee where it did not belong.

She described her own positive impressions and repeated claims about energy, skin and a warm feeling in the stomach. Chris remained unconvinced and kept returning to the practical question of how Scott expected coffee to get from a mug into the treatment he had planned.

The show presented the claims as Harriet’s experience and enthusiasm rather than as medical advice. For Scott, the important thing was that he had found somebody willing to tell Chris that the idea was not completely ridiculous.

Sam Fender entered Scott’s imaginary vocal academy

Sam Fender arrived for the promised vocal coaching. Scott introduced himself as though he had a proven record of improving major artists and treated the session with the seriousness of a professional masterclass.

The comedy came from the mismatch between Fender, a successful singer, and Scott confidently behaving as if a few studio exercises were the missing piece in his career. The lesson joined a long line of Mills coaching sessions where the artist’s existing ability was less important than Scott’s belief that he could make it even better.

The show had found its two running obsessions

By the end of Wednesday, the week had settled into two parallel stories. One involved a genuinely talented musician being “improved” by Scott. The other involved Chris being slowly worn down into agreeing to a treatment he had never wanted. Both depended on Scott acting as if his decision had already been made for everybody else.
