5 June 2019: Cheryl completely lost it with Superfan Steve

Listen to this episode

Scott had acquired an animal fan

Scott had been in a pub meeting when a man approached and asked for a photograph.

The man had a dog called Mazey and said she loved Scott’s voice from hearing him on the radio.

Scott held the dog and repeatedly said her name.

Mazey appeared genuinely excited.

That was enough for Scott to decide he might have a special relationship with animals.

Listeners immediately supplied evidence from their own pets.

Dogs perked up during the show.

A hamster supposedly became more active between one and four.

One person said their snake preferred Chris.

Another claimed a tortoise reacted to Scott’s voice.

Chris thought Scott’s ego was expanding into the animal kingdom.

Mazey’s owner confirmed the story

Later, Mazey’s owner Graham called.

He explained that the dog had listened to Radio 1 from puppyhood and appeared to recognise Scott’s voice.

Mazey was already something of a local celebrity and regularly took part in 5K park runs.

Scott was delighted.

Chris remained unsure whether Mazey loved Scott or simply recognised her own name being shouted at her.

The Drake Curse became personal

Listeners continued sending songs associated with bad luck.

One caller blamed Taylor Swift’s “22” for becoming ill around birthdays.

Another cited Rihanna’s “Umbrella” and the terrible weather associated with its chart run.

Scott liked the idea that certain records could become permanently linked with one bad event, even when there was obviously no scientific connection.

The feature had become less about Drake himself and more about music people no longer trusted.

Bamboleo Wednesday returned

The midweek archive tradition returned with listeners choosing old show clips for the instrumental gap in “Bamboleo”.

Scott and Chris treated the section with the usual disproportionate importance.

The programme was already waiting for the real event of the afternoon.

Superfan Steve.

Cheryl met her biggest fan

Cheryl was told Radio 1 had found an enormous fan who had followed her career since Popstars: The Rivals.

“Steve” joined by phone.

In reality, Chris was sitting in the studio next door with the answers.

The quiz covered details from across Cheryl’s life and career.

Her middle name.

Her first solo number one.

Her Chihuahua.

The number of solo UK number ones.

A favourite chocolate bar.

Her childhood British Gas advert.

Her first concert.

Steve repeatedly knew the answers before Cheryl did.

Sometimes he knew them when Cheryl herself could not remember.

Cheryl tried not to laugh

The awkwardness became the whole feature.

Steve’s strange delivery and long pauses made Cheryl visibly uncomfortable.

She did not want to laugh at somebody she believed was a genuine fan.

That effort made her laugh even more.

At one stage she was almost on the floor trying to keep control.

Scott eventually revealed the truth.

There was no obsessive Steve.

It was Chris.

Cheryl’s relief was immediate.

She said she had genuinely believed the caller existed and had been wondering how anybody could know that much.

The video spread widely after broadcast.

Scott and Chris quickly regarded it as one of Superfan Steve’s strongest appearances.
